Great unit. Mel is a great lecturer and tutor. He wants everyone to do the best they possibly can. I think that the only way you can fail this unit is by not showing up to tutorials and not submitting your assignments. Assessment hotlines are available the week that an assessment is due (available on certain days and times). You're also able to send Mel your draft essays for feedback. If you get stuck and only have dot points, you can send that to him and he'll help you get started. I have never seen a unit coordinator/lecturer/tutor be so supportive of of students.

This is one of the most eye opening unit I have ever done. It is very interesting at every stage. The assignments are straightforward and easy to get a HD. The tutors are so freaking nice. They actually want you to learn and get a good grade. Highly recommend this unit.

I really enjoyed this unit! The unit coordinators and all the tutors seem to care more about me actually learning something than testing my ability to just regurgitate facts. The content was very interesting. The workload wasn't heavy at all with 1 lecture per week and only for the first 10 weeks. There are weekly readings, and 1x 1-hour tutorial a week. I admittedly didn't do all the readings. You get 25% of your grade just from attending the tutorial. We had to work in groups of 5 during the tutorials to answer questions about the readings and the lecture from the week before. These quizzes aren't graded, and they release the questions for the tutorial the week before so you can go over them and prepare. The goal of the tutorials is to start discussions in a safe space more so than answering questions. We had to write a review and reflection for 2 Australian films out of 8 that they provided (250 words per reflection and per review) which was worth 25%. I found this super easy and got an 87. The final 50% of the grade was made up by an essay (no exam, yay!). They provided 8 questions/essay topics that were released at the start fo semester so you have 13 weeks to work on it! I suck at essay writing and hate it with a passion, but I still got a 78 on the essay in the end. The unit coordinator opened an assessment hotline in the days leading up to each assignment due date so you could call him if you needed any help or had any questions. The week before the major essay was due, the unit coordinator was also giving feedback on any completed rough drafts that were submitted to him via email. I found this to be a really lovely touch to the unit which shows just how much the unit coordinator and tutors genuinely care about you and how much they want to help you do well.

This is the best unit you will ever do. The content involved is something I believe all Australians should learn at some point in their lives. It provides amazing and insightful aboriginal perspectives. The assessments were VERY fair and it is definitely not a hard unit.

Easily the best unit I have ever done, I highly recommend this unit if you are looking for a relaxing and easy time. Although the amount of writing needed in this unit may seem daunting, it is actually really easy to do, an easy HD without a doubt as long as you try. I came into this unit with very little knowledge on Indigenous Australian culture and had many doubts over this unit upon picking it, but now after finishing the unit I have no regrets in my decision. With engaging content, lectures and tutorials along-with non-subjective marking that values hardwork, this unit is by far the best unit the uni has to offer.

My favourite teaching staff so far at UWA. The assessments were highly relevant and easy to achieve a HD in if you actually focus throughout the unit. I would recommend all UWA students do this eye opening unit to increase their cultural understanding

A very easy unit with minimal effort required to achieve a good grade. Only one lecture and one tutorial per week. No exam and assessments are quite straightforward. Mel is very lenient and understanding when it comes to these assessments.
