Reviews

Agree with the previous comment very odd unit a lot more creative than it should be. Although low effort and you can get a decent grade.

RUN AWAY, if you're considering taking this. This doesn't mean it isn't an informative unit. The content is extensive, you learn from experts in their field about the stages of life. You'll learn things you'd not bother to look up. Run away because the assignments are atrocious, organisation is whack and the communication is abysmal. Read the other comments for yourself. IMED1108 is a unit confused between being a language, arts/creative and science unit. Often what the unit coordinators will say one thing in the assignment guidelines and contradict themselves whilst marking. I don't often leave scathing remarks over things in life in general, for me to have to type this, it shows the level of inconsistency in this unit. The unit is dysfunctional and has serious issues striking the balance between creativity vs objectivity, proper language use vs nitpicking. These contradictions make it impossible to ascertain what the tutors and unit coordinators want. If you want the knowledge; go ahead google it. If you want the knowledge and good grades, save yourself the trouble, ask someone who took it previously for the slides and take another unit. If you want to take it for the grades, just trust me and RUN AWAY from this unit.

I loved this unit! Demelza, Monique and Philippa are great Unit Coordinators! There were 2 lectures every week (which are easy to watch online). Lecture content was assessed with two online tests (middle and end of sem). There was a group video project (great if you have a great team). A semester long fictional health history assignment (which was broken into pieces and assessed in the start and end of sem). I have also done the follow up unit (IMED2208) which was also run by Demelza and Philippa. IMED1108 is definitely easier than IMED2208, but both are fascinating units. If you want a level 1 unit with no exam IMED1108 or 2208 are great options- but be prepared to do the work! :)

This unit was so wild because it has some of the best content, but some of the worst assignments and organisation ever. The content was all interesting, and most of them were given by guest lecturers. Unfortunately they're 8am lectures, so that is a major detriment and thus I never went to a lecture physically. The lectures content was assessed by 2 tests, also at 8am, which frustrated me, but at least they were LMS tests so I just woke up at 7:50 and did them and slept. The tutorials are quite tedious to be honest, and somewhat boring. The written assignment was such a mess. It's a fictional story of a female person throughout their lifespan, which is fun, but the fact that this is a medical sciences (IMED) unit doing creative work did put me off as I am not used to creative writing. It was also heavily weighted (2 parts totaling 50%). The video assignment was also iffy as well. Having to work with people where you only see them in class fortnightly is a mess. If they wanted to do group video assignments, they should make the tutorials weekly so we are forced into more time working together. Overall, great content, wish it had better assignments and less 8am stuff.

I give the two stars for the content which was very interesting. Other than that the unit itself was very annoying. The team video was a disaster due to the fact that we never meet in person. The 2 quizzes was the only part of this unit that was fair. Although it focused more on numbers rather than other info. The worst part in my opinion is the creative case history which is marked very harshly. Overall it is not easy to get a HD but it’s not impossible. It also depends on luck of getting a good tutor and good group for the team project.

The unit topics are so interesting and valuable! But like the other reviewers on this page I found the organisation of the unit quite annoying.

A great unit in terms of information and assessments (no exams, yay!) though I wasn't the biggest fan of the creative assignment or the timing of the lectures (8 a.m. starts are tough). The lecturers were mostly great, but quality and style did vary by a fair bit at times.

Found this unit really interesting, and all the lecturers were very enthusiastic about their topics, however 8am lectures are not fun. It had a new assessment component compared to previous years. It had a promotional health group video, two tests which were multiple choice, and 4 short stories submitted every 3 weeks and a justification statement along with it. I found the short stories really hard, only averaging around 60%, probably because they were looking for really specific aspects in your stories, however did quite well in the justification statement because it’s more based on providing evidence for your story. Everyone did quite well in the tests, and I got above 90% for both, which mostly comes down to enjoying the content though. I had a good group, but if you've got a bad group then the group video might be tough as there wasn't a lot fo time to complete it. A really fun unit, especially if you’re looking for a unit without an exam.

This unit was so interesting! Lots of information that'll stay with you forever about interesting topics such as IVF, eating disorders, pregnancy/giving birth, cancers, eyesight as you age, female genital mutilation and dementia just to name a few. The creative writing assessments were quite annoying as they were marked harshly considering the tiny word limit. Other than that, the MC tests were fair and lack of exam made this a pretty cruisy and fun unit!

I loved this unit. I learned so much and the lecture content was super interesting! The MCQ tests were pretty easy if you studied the lecture slides but there were a lot of statistics which was a bit pointless. I didn't really like the creative assignment very much and I think they expected a lot for how small the word limit was and it was marked pretty harshly but overall a really fun and interesting unit to do and no exam!!
