Reviews

Do not this unit unless this is your core unit for engineering.

Ok unit. Hated the materials part because i felt like it was a fair bit of rote learning but the statics part was really good! Lecturer for the first part was ok but the second part was a bit better. There were 2 groups projects. My facilitator was a very harsh marker so I didnt get great marks for these. Info sessions were pretty boring but good for understanding. Overall, a pretty boring unit that you just have to do

Hated this unit with a passion. If you don't like chemistry or classical mechanics (like another person said in their review) this unit will drive you mad. I didn't think that this unit was well-organised at all. The lecturers were hard to understand. The projects were insanely boring. We had to hand in the last project during the last study week RIGHT BEFORE exams. I truly respect this unit...because it drove me mad like no other.

A boring and mandatory waste of time to study if your Engineering discipline of choice doesn't involve classical mechanics. I intend to study Software Engineering and having to take a Mechanical Engineering unit simply made me fucking livid.

Just a heads up: if you were looking forward to whatever this build a bridge project was, like I had been the whole sem, the project has changed :( No bridge building at least for us. Otherwise, a unit with a lot of resources available and organised on the LMS.

A well organised unit, Ensc1002 is a very good introduction into engineering. Easy to follow, plenty of help and fairly easy course content. Only negative: the first project was a little bit monotonous, which made it boring for both students and unit coordinators.

I took this in 2016, Sem 2. I only watched the online lectures. The information sessions were helpful to build your problem solving ability, and the workshop just enhances the application part. One of the pros in this unit is the bridge project made out of balloon sticks as it makes you creative, and apply the trusses you have learned in the info session. One of the cons is the statics experiment part 2 as students were not serious about it during workshop as there were no assessment included. Additionally, the final exam just had 2 questions that was straight copy from the lecture slides. It was not right in a sense that the exam topics only covered 4 weeks/13 weeks. But give this unit time and focus, and you can get HD.

Need to keep follow up the information of each information session each week. A lot of practices needed to get better understanding. Lectures are very helpful. No lecture in the semester 1 2012 which make it quite challenging.

The tips for this unit is to complete all of the information sessions exercises..for the workshop sessions, you'll need to build a bridge and also to disassemble a toaster. This is the most enjoyable part of the this unit..besides that, don't forget you'll also need to write reports for both of the projects. All the best and good luck! :)
