The unit coordinator Lara is an incredible teacher of Latin. It was only thanks to her that I actually had a chance to pass this unit. She explains things with the class and walks everyone through new content using the whiteboard and other examples and doesn‘t make you feel stupid for asking a question. If Neil, the other teacher in this class, was the only one that had to teach us I would not have had a chance to even consider passing. He likes to use the limited amount of class time we have to talk about how important it is to attend class as well as belittling students that aren’t fluent in Latin after only a few weeks of studying it. He also likes to frequently mention how long he has been studying it, which you'd think would make him a better teacher in it. He prefers to spend his time reading directly from the book and just expecting people to get it with no extra explanation. If you take this unit I would recommend finding out which classes Lara takes and moving into those, if unfortunately you have to live through one of Neil's classes good luck in being able to pass any of the minor tests! You'll need it. If Lara alone took this unit it would get 5/5.

CLAN1101 was an excellent unit in 2013, helped by the knowledge and enthusiasm shown by the unit coordinator, Michael Champion, and tutors. In-class learning and discussion is largely driven by the textbook, although further material is available on LMS. I found this teaching method quite decent, and preferable to that used in the modern languages. Tests are bi-weekly, so it is advisable to keep up with the work.
