This unit was nothing like I expected it to be. I've done several other archaeology units in the past and absolutely loved them but my experience with this unit is quite different. It doesnt feel like a broadening elective as everyome else suggested. Every week there is a required one page write up (super time consuming) about an article that you have to hand in in person at the tutes, if you miss two of these then you loose not only the marks for these reading responses but you forfeit your entire mark for 2 of the other worksheet assignments worth 20% cumulatively. There's 4 of these other worksheets worth 10% each. Super time consuming also. You also run the risk of getting called out for academic misconduct if you incorrectly cite as this is assessed super stringently throughout the entire unit. I had fun with the content and final blog assignment but generally this unit kept me up at night in a cold sweat. HD is achievable though so I can't really complain. There's a bit of group work involved in 2 of the worksheets also which can be quite stressful

I still got a distinction but this unit is kinda overrated in my opinion. There are 10 quizzes worth 20 percent in total and with usually just 5 questions. While this may seem like a cakewalk it really isnt and usually your given 3 texts probably like 20 pages each, which means it takes a while to find the answers. Even control + f wasnt always the answer which was frustrating. Sometimes the answer also isnt in the text which was pretty frustrating in which I used chat gpt to get the right answer( work smart not hard). There are also 2 individual assignments worth 12.5 percent, I found the first one really useful as it was a plan for a big blog assignment which i'll discuss later. However the second individual assignment was a big bummer but not because its hard but because of the sheer workload. I remember me taking a whole week just to do this assignment like researching and typing. To get really good marks you generally have to do alot of effort which kinda annoying as it interferes with other units. However my distinction mainly came from the 3 group assignments which I loved as its easy to delegate tasks and as a result your workload is significantly reduced. The big blog is worth 40 percent and although you've given a lot of time to work on this, its still involves Alot and I mean Alot of research depending of course on which topic you pick. Also in my opinion the blog was marked slightly harsh and besides the planning assignment there isnt much guideline. Also I found it soo annoying how the unit coordinators expect like 80 to 90 percent of your references to be from journal article which 9 times out of 10 isnt possible ( bearing in mind most people probably have work from other units and causal/ part time job). Finally I think this unit is overated is because its quite expensive ( nearly 2 k ) and other level 2 electives like the public health units are easier , have lower workload and are cheaper. Thus its true, getting d or hd can be possible and it can be a good level 2 elective, however its expensive, too much workload, some boring content ( most archeological sites were from UK or european), harsh on referencing, too much prep just for a 2 percent quiz etc

Did this unit as a broadening unit and I don't regret it at all. This unit overall was interesting and as long as you stay on top of your tutorial worksheets and quizzes I would say this unit is a an easy HD too.

Awesome unit! Very interesting and taught amazingly by Sven. I did this unit during covid isolation and Sven kept everything stress free and the unit ran very smoothly! The topics are fascinating and very respectfully dealt with - as it is all about death. (the added bonus is that there's no exam YAY!) Quizzes every week are pretty easy if you do the readings, and tute work is heavily based on what you learn each week, with just a bit of research required. A great unit overall!

The unit was pretty easy. There was minimal effort required for a low HD. There are quizzes almost every week and although only 5 questions, they are based of 2-3 readings which are content heavy. The tutorial presentation was pretty easily marked and you get to pick the topic you want. Each topic has an assigned week and the essays are due two weeks after the tutorial so if you wanted to you could finish the unit really early. The tutorials only really go for 35 minutes and its composed of people doing their presentations and a 10 minute talk from the tutor.

The content of the unit is interesting, you have to give a presentation and write an essay. It's a pretty chill unit, the tutors are nice and care about the subject matter. You get to pick a topic to present on and you write an essay on the same topic. The quizzes are quite difficult, as there is a lot of readings to look through.
