Interesting topic but weekly readings are so long and the lecturers are super boring and long. My tutor never talked about lectures and just discussed the book we were reading.

Great unit to take only if you are genuinely interested in the content. Personally enjoyed the unit but still found the weekly readings a bit much at times. Lectures can get draggy as mentioned but most of the content is covered in the weekly readings, so you may be able to get by without watching the lectures at all. Exams mostly test knowledge from the weekly readings. Essay requires effort but a high mark is achievable (I got 90%). Unit coordinators and tutors were great and super helpful and overall, the unit was well managed. Not an easy HD but I do not regret taking this unit!

Way too much reading - 2-4 hours per week. Lectures were so boring I would fall asleep. Too much focus on textbook definitions and not enough on interesting cultures and societies. Not what I expected at all.

Painful unit. Lots of reading. Case study essay was marked pretty harshly.

Great unit. Readings were very interesting. Gives you a broad introduction to topics such as Politics, Economics, Kinship, Religion, Media and Environment. Unit very well-organised. Lecturer very passionate about his subject, communicates regularly to students and replies quickly to emails and questions on Blackboard. The tutor I had was incredible! She was so helpful and understanding, always willing to help and give you her time to explain concepts, etc. You will gain a lot from this unit if you put in the effort. 25% of final mark from tutorials and easy online quiz. Remember to keep up with the weekly readings and put in effort in completing the tutorial sheets - this will help you immensely in your essay and exam. The tutorial worksheets are marked based on effort and completion, not whether your answer is correct. This unit opened my mind - I hope if you decide to take this unit, it will yours too.

Really painful unit. So much to read every week, and the content was personally super boring. The research essay was difficult to do and requires high effort to get a good mark. Unit coordinator is a super nice guy but the lectures are SO LONG.

Case study essay was marked relatively strictly. The ethnography used was based in Papua New Guinea and was a good read. Apart from that, the unit was not all that fantastic.

The concepts were quite interesting but the lectures were really boring and went on for ages. The tutorials were always filled with discussions and interesting ideas. The essay and exam was marked pretty harshly.

Quizzes were relatively easy, as long as you keep up with the weekly readings. The ethnography was really interesting - be sure to take down notes along the way to aid you in your essay prep. That being said, the essay bit was strictly marked. My exam helped me clinch a borderline distinction despite sitting at a credit the whole sem so that was great. Would only recommend if you're keen on lots of literature.

This unit was excellent. The online quizzes had a 12 hour window to complete and I missed one because of work. Recommend setting an alarm to complete them. Great tutors too.
