Reviews
ANHB1101 is incredibly difficult for level 1 unit, but it was my favourite unit that I sat this semester. I never did anatomy and human biology in high school, and this unit allowed to me to learn so many fundamental concepts. The learning resources are amazing for this unit: good lectures, online pre-labs & tests, textbook questions, 4 past exam papers (with answers), and recommended reading. Vanessa Hayes had the best lectures (I especially loved the retrieval practice exercises) and she was a responsive unit coordinator. I wish I could give this unit 5/5 stars, but I really did not enjoy the final exam. During semester we learned embryology quite in-depth, but there was only about 4 related questions in the exam. They were extremely easy, and I felt like it was a punishment to those who bothered to understand the concepts. The arrows in the tissue questions were so poorly placed which I'm certain caused me to lose marks. No matter how much you study for this unit, some questions in the exam will trip you up. Overall I'd still fully recommend this unit!

This is a well structured unit that is genuinely interesting and engaging. 30% of your total marks come from online quizzes and pre-labs which can be repeated as many times as you wish. Another 10% is allocated towards attending the tutorials. This means that you should go into the exam with 40% of your grade already under your belt. Passing this unit is extremely easy if that's your goal. I did have some issues with the unit. Primarily the disconnect between some of the lecturing content compared to it's tutorial content. The genetics lectures in particular were very hard to follow and when it came down to the tutorial work the two seemed to contrast one another. Other than a few other minor gripes, I honestly cannot complain about this unit, I really enjoyed it and was very happy with my final mark. Vanessa and Fiona are very responsive to emails also, which is always a plus for any unit.

This unit is highly useful, and I can see why it has such a large intake of students each semester! It considers almost all fields of the human body, which gives an excellent foundation for your degree (and a better understanding of how and why you are alive today). If you follow all of the practise tests, do all of the practise exams, and all assessments, you will guarantee yourself a lovely HD. Of course, this unit is infamous for the amount of information, and the best advice I can give is: teach someone who wants to take the unit, or offer to teach someone who wants to take the unit next semester. I hope you do well, and I wish you all the best in completing your studies :)

Vanessa and Fiona were awesome unit coordinators :) The unit was super well organised and presented. Really easy to get a HD as long as you keep on top of the weekly quizzes. If you did well in Human Biology ATAR at high school you probably know about 75% of the material already.

The exam was not what I was expecting... :( It was all multi choice but there were so many multi-part questions that if you didn't understand the question/concept of question 64, for example, then you couldn't answer questions 64-72 because the following questions were all to do with that particular question. I was expecting each question to be on a different topic and thus representative of my knowledge of the unit as a whole, but they only tested a few concepts. I studied so much and 90% of it wasn't even in the exam

Really nice unit and content covered- pretty similar to Year 12 maybe a bit more detail. Exam was all MCQ which is good if you like that! Quite content heavy but enjoyable as well! Would recommend

Lectures are frequently overloaded with excess material. The tutorials are very fun and engaging, but can vary based on the tutor you get. Assessments only involve participation and simple, repeatable weekly quizzes. Exam was all MCQ (thanks COVID). If you did HBIO in high school, easiest HD of your life :)

It would be way easier if you have done human bio in year 12. 40% of the unit is lab participation and weekly online quizzes, 60% is the final exam which is MCQ and short and QS. You need to study well for it to be able to do well so if you don't have time and don't have to do the unit I wouldn't recommend it. Other than that it's a pretty good unit and well organised

Very interesting unit! Builds you up from the microscopic to macro in terms of content and you build on knowledge each week. Unlike most I did not take ATAR Human Biology in Year 11 or 12 but still found this unit doable with a lot of hard work and commitment. The UCs always want the best for you and crack a few jokes along the way! Great assessments that allow you to get the best marks possible through the semester that also help build your memory!
