Community Engagement Tasmania Society (COMET)

COMET is a social justice initiative powered by law students that aims to empower disadvantaged youth through the teaching of key criminal law concepts. COMET provides engaging, high quality education sessions to at-risk young people on the criminal law. The result: young people discover what their rights and responsibilities are. COMET provides aspiring lawyers with training in facilitation, rapport building and education. Our facilitators leave law school with experience and skill in working with diverse and challenging groups, explaining complex concepts in understandable ways, and running training sessions. COMET also is providing volunteering opportunities, training and information to law students and the University of Tasmania community. COMET raises awareness of what youth homelessness is, what challenges young people experiencing homelessness face, and how young people interact with the justice system.
