Some content was pretty interesting, and lecturers were very helpful. However, this subject's downfall was it was WAY too much work for a 3cp subject. Proceed with caution!

Some of the lecture notes were messy, and it was hard to understand the lecturers in some cases. I would recommend Nathan Brownlowe, who was great and explained concepts in an easy to explain way. The content of the subject was completely different from high school, making it a lot more effort than the other first semester maths subject (MATH1021). Fairly interesting; at first it seemed like the structure was a bit messy, but all the topics do end up linking together.

easier than math1001, its all good until week 10 lol

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2016

Exam was pretty hard compared to 1001. It's quite different to the type of maths you learn in the HSC

The subject was quite simple in its content, a great alternate math subject for someone who wants to stay away from the calculus subjects.

Pretty interesting and fun course, different to MATH1001/MATH1003 in the sense that Differential/Integral Calculus sort of carry on from high school maths, but MATH1002 is new and different to what the majority of students have done before. Most of your learning will happen in tutorials; lectures just go over the bare basics usually with quite straight forward proofs/examples, but the tutorial sheets contain quite a lot of questions to practice (which you may never finish in a short one hour tutorial). Everything builds up, so make sure you've got the basics down and are up to date with the content.

Really great course! A very new approach to maths compared to high school maths (which revolves more around calculus). The tutorial sheets are interesting and the teaching (I had David Easdown) generally great.

I quite like this subject

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2014

Quite an interesting course! Would definitely recommend!

This is quite an interesting subject, and I believe is important knowledge for anyone looking at doing intermediate mathematics. A lot of the material was surprisingly straightforward - a lot of the vector and matrix operations are just lots of addition/multiplication of small integers, and the hardest thing is making sure you do it all in the right order. The topics covered are quite different to anything most people have done before (assuming you've done HSC maths of any level) so don't necessarily expect to know anything in advance - however, if you're a mathematical thinker, it shouldn't take too long to get used to. The final exam was a fair bit more difficult than most of the tutorial questions and in-class quizzes, so if you want to do well be very confident with the nitty-gritty details of each topic (especially the last part of the course).
