Reviews

I had Studio 101 back in 2013 when it was not yet integrated with Communications, the introduction in the first few weeks was a bit too abstract for my taste. It was very conceptual and did not really give us any specifications as to the environment of the building, there were some height and scale requirements but that wasn't too harshly enforced. Tips: I don't know about the new curriculum, but be prepared for the tutors as either not being able to, or not willing to answer some of your questions on how your building doesn't 'work'. My tutor was quite vague with his answers. You will be required to print a portfolio of your work, the organisation and aesthetic execution of that is a task in itself. Document everything with your phone or camera at hand. You'll be thanking yourself during the week before the hand in, as you don't have to stress about finding good photos and can focusing on actually making the portfolio look good. But how to get it to look good? Ay, there's the rub. Adobe Photoshop and Indesign skills are essential to pull this off, as well as research into professional architect's portfolios. Professional presentation is a skill that is cross transferable throughout all industries and can make or break the impact of your ideas, so even if you change your mind about architecture, time in this area is well spent.
