This is a really fun, well taught subject. Ellis is a great teacher and also a really nice person. Structure: 2 two hour classes (workshops) per week; held on the same day, 2 hour break between them The first workshop was a lecture by Ellis or a guest. During the lecture there would often be group activities to complete - e.g. coming up with different types of data to collect from patients. The guest lecturers mostly spoke about clinical/disease/non-maths stuff. Ellis' lectures were about stats, with lots of room to ask questions. The second workshop was to practice the stats we'd learnt on R. There would be as assigned "worksheet" and you'd work throughout it with your table/group. Ellis and the tutors would walk around and help/answer questions. Assessments: 4 mini R "lab reports" (10%); in-semester, open book exam (40%?); 2 group projects - R report + presentation (50%?). None of the assessments were overly difficult. If you stay on top of the coursework then you'll definitely know enough to complete the lab reports and group assignments without to much extra (stats) research. The exam wasn't too bad and you had access to your computer. The subject is marked pretty fairly. Content: It's basically a stats subject that focuses on medical/biological applications. If you don't like stats, then you might not enjoy the course. I would say the difficulty level is slightly above MATH1005 but assessed in an easier way. Group tasks involved getting to choose your own content - which was a little stressful but also fun. The stuff you're learning will be really helpful for research/honours. I think this is the best AMED subject.
