UTS Science Tutor Matthew

Dr. Matthew Brendan O'Rourke is an expert in proteomics and mass spectrometry, with a PhD from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). His research focuses on using advanced mass spectrometry techniques to study disease mechanisms and diagnostics, particularly in chronic respiratory diseases like COPD and severe asthma.
Currently a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow and Proteomics Node Leader at the Centre for Inflammation at UTS, Dr. O'Rourke leads projects exploring the molecular landscape of respiratory diseases and identifying biomarkers for personalized treatments. He has collaborated on more than 25 projects across disciplines, contributing to advancements in proteomic research and personalized medicine.
Dr. O'Rourke holds multiple degrees, including a BSc in evolutionary biology, an LLB focusing on biotechnology and intellectual property law, and a Certificate IV in leadership and management. His diverse academic background has allowed him to bridge the gap between science and law, making him a versatile professional in the biotech field.
His career includes roles as a scientific consultant for industry and as a researcher at the University of Sydney, where he contributed to bowel cancer and biomarker discovery. He has also served as a Technical Officer managing mass spectrometry facilities and has taught extensively in allied health and life sciences at TAFE Sydney.
Dr. O'Rourke has over 30 publications in high-impact journals, covering topics like biomarker discovery, proteomics, and diagnostics. His work has earned prestigious awards, including the UTS Chancellor's List Award for Outstanding Doctoral Thesis and election to the Royal Society of New South Wales. He is also a regular peer reviewer for major journals and an editorial board member for Frontiers in Oncology and Proteomes.
In addition to his research and academic achievements, Dr. O'Rourke is deeply involved in community service. A senior officer with St. John Ambulance, he has risen through the ranks and currently serves as Divisional Superintendent. He is also a former president of the Hornsby Concert Band, where he led initiatives to secure funding and manage community projects.
Dr. O'Rourke’s leadership, interdisciplinary research, and dedication to public service make him a key figure in both scientific and community circles, contributing to advancements in healthcare, education, and community engagement
