Reviews

It's a first year content heavy subject. If you're interested in Ecology you may find it interesting. Personally, I found the workshops to be out of step with the assignment schedule, and the assignments themselves to be high in expectation and low in feedback or helpful structural advice. Teaching staff are incredibly nice and I mean absolutely no disrespect to their passion or efforts. As always, take reviews with a grain of salt - I just haven't found the subject enjoyable or helpful in the broader context of building scientific communication skills or essay writing (a key focus of the subject). The essay feedback is close to useless (think single word comments on every fourth paragraph) for the severity of marking (you get a 4 or 5 with no real explanation as to why or how you can improve) and the delivery of two separate lectures on two separate themes each week essentially doubles the content load from 13 weeks to 26. As someone who has studied undergrad previously and who works I haven't found it to be a reasonable workload for a 102 subject. The second field practical to SERF and the poorly designed experiment that had a groups go around smashing up ant colonies and stomping uncaring through the bush was actually the point that led to changing my major from Environmental Science. As someone who works in this field outside of uni it was really disappointing to see the lack of care and education around actual field work. I wish the subject was more focused on helping students improve skills than ticking boxes of saying you did an experiment and you did an essay. It's not all doom and gloom and the content can be interesting, it's just a very frustrating subject in my opinion.
