Reviews

This unit was one of the better chemistry units I have studied but it felt very disorganised. The first 4 weeks of content were easy to follow and the mid-sem test was what I was expecting. When Phil took over in week 5 things got so messy. The learning outcomes were not followed in his lectures, he was rabbling a lot and which made it hard to follow what he was saying. I couldn't distinguish what content was examinable and what was not. Jie's lectures on the other hand were more structured and he explained concepts well. The lab component of this subject was a semester-long project which again felt disorganised (maybe because it was moved online mid way through the sem). Overall this subject was easy to do well in because the mid-sem test and exam were similar to practice work. Lab marks were also very easy to gain.

It had some good and bad moments, but I mostly enjoyed my time in this unit. The lecturers were mostly terrible, especially Phil Marriott lectures which were just a mess. The lab was interesting as we got to complete a research project throughout the semester. However, my supervisor for the labs (Bayden) was just not that great as he did not explain concepts very well and was a poor planner in terms of the scope of the study. Exam wasn't too difficult and the markers for the lab component are very generous.
