Reviews

Completed this course in CNS. Overall, the subject was very rushed. I did not like the concept of a calculator test and numeracy test either. I don't really think they helped me in passing the subject. Also, the fact that she did not record the lectures so that people would come was kinda understandable but this meant there was nothing to look back on while studying. She only uploaded the answers, no working out on Learn JCU. This is why I ended up watching the lecture videos from TSV which really helped me pass. Not sure if things have been changed since.

Ignore the reviews about the teacher being great. He left. The current lecturer is antagonistic, unapproachable, judgemental, and terrible at teaching. I actually started taking this course an earlier year and dropped out in the first weeks in the hopes the lecturer might have changed. This course has the backwards thinking design of not letting you use a calculator, and all the reasons the lecturer quotes for this are moronic. This is particularly true for people who only want to complete a maths B equivalent to study other courses like chemistry. It is both geared towards the completely ignorant, and yet also perhaps not simple enough. For instance, you are not allowed to use a calculator, but there is still ONE 'calculator test' to gauge whether people know how to even operate one. This is because the uni had too many students going on into other subjects and not knowing how to complete simple tasks with their calculators. On the other hand the lecturer completely skips over things like Pythagorean theorem. If you expect to have students who can't even use a calculator, I'm not sure why you expect them to know simpler maths either. It feels like this subject is a terrible mish-mash of things the uni wants to accomplish which probably belong in easier courses (like calculator literacy) or no course at all (learn to do maths without a calculator on your own time) and they just slapped a 'maths B equivalent' sticker on top of it.
