Reviews

The workload for FINA3324 is fairly manageable outside of the assignments, and the lecture topics are somewhat interesting and relatable. However, for a third-year finance unit, the content lacks depth, and much of it feels like something that could be learned independently outside of university. The weekly quizzes were straightforward and manageable, but tutorial participation felt less useful. The tutorials were one of the weaker parts of the unit and did not provide much support for the assignments or final exam, although this may depend on the tutor. The assignments were generally okay, but the marking felt quite harsh and subjective. I received 75% for Part A and 72% for Part B, which were fair results overall, but the feedback provided was limited and did not clearly explain how marks were awarded or where improvements could be made. Given that the final exam is worth 60%, I feel the assignment marking could be more transparent and slightly more lenient. The final exam was doable, but the format needs to be revised. Having only six short-answer questions determine 60% of the final grade feels excessive, especially when the questions can cover content from across the entire semester. The questions were also quite broad and sometimes seemed to come from tutorial questions, lecture comments, or small points mentioned during class rather than the main areas we were prepared for. Overall, the unit is manageable, but the assessment structure could be improved. More detailed assignment feedback, better tutorial support, and a fairer final exam format would make the unit much better.

Pretty low workload apart from the assignments, and the lectures are somewhat interesting and relatable I guess. However, there is definitely a lack of depth for a 3rd year unit, as imo you could probably learn most of the content outside of uni. How well you do also somewhat depends on your background knowledge of finance, as lectures and tutorials help very little in doing the assignments. Assignment marking is very subjective and inconsistent; almost no reasoning for your mark is provided, and it was a joke tbh. Final exam is doable to do well in, however I feel like the questions were pretty different compared to what they were preparing us for. Exam format needs to be revised as well; 6 short answer questions for 60% of your grade is kinda ridiculous, and only about half the content was tested. Tutorials were so bad, but it may depend on your tutor.

Overall, a very broad unit, a fair lecturer, and if you get Sharang as your tutor, he's quite generous with the tute participation marks. DO NOT CRAM & you can get HD by paying attention to the tutorial notes.

Key takeaways. Broad unit, but very doable to do well in. The final exam drew a lot from the tutorial questions. Like what the other review said, don't cram for the final because you score on how well you can justify your position, as often there are a few "right" answers to a question. So take your time to really understand what’s being said in the lecture, do some practice responses, and get someone to read them and tell you if they make sense. I found the essays pretty interesting, but time-consuming just from the sheer amount of research. Overall, Ray is an excellent teacher, and this unit was really applicable to just life in general.

Lecture content s quite vague but this unit is more about challenging your way of thinking than anything else. Tutorial questions resemble final exam somewhat. It is important to think about what Raymond lectures and understand current topics. Exam is pretty straight forward but would be hard to cram as it requires a general knowledge of what is discussed/finance. Overall very interesting and HD is easily possibly. 2 Individual Assignments are also very interesting. Raymond is a brilliant lecturer

Legit don't stress. Remember reading these reviews everyone was like ah mah god unit is vague and difficult, but I ended up with a high HD. For the final exam, all you need to do are the tute q's and that silly professor reused questions from past exam papers specifically 2014 exam prac. q's on studocu. Also, don't waste time finding examples that can be found a couple days before the exam. Assignments were alright however can be made up with the exam. Quiz answers can also be found on quizlet and studocu cuz he reuses the questions he asks.

Ray is an excellent lecturer who takes the time to explain all the concepts clearly, whilst linking them with current events in the world of finance. Quizzes are sometimes ambiguous but can be reasoned straight from the lecture. To get a high mark in the assignment make sure to reference reliable sources i.e. studies from reputable universities, and avoid news articles. Exam was worth 60%, so a good opportunity to boost your mark if you didn't do so well in the quizzes/assignment. I was able to get an HD 91 in this unit by carefully reviewing lecture slides, tutorials, and paying close attention to the week 12 lecture in preparation for the final.

Unit is all over the place, no solid concepts taught except for a single formula, the lectures are almost exclusively current events in the world of finance with minimum links to concepts taught. Quiz questions and tutorials are vague and open ended, with most being able to be argued both ways. Ray does seem knowledgable but the unit is just not well designed or taught. Skip if you can

This unit quite unorganised. The lecturer, tutors and unit coordinators are all very good people but the unit itself is just a mess. The lectures are way too long and there's no actual lecture slides its just summaries of articles. Its so hard to understand what is going on in tutorials. This unit is pretty much all theory, no calc which i didnt mind for a change. Final exams worth 60% and is 6 short answer questions in 3 hours. They mark well though, but I would avoid this unit where possible. Ive never been so clueless for a whole semester of a unit.

It is completely an awful unit and I nearly failed . No specific content to learn and not taught in depth for each content, just broad knowledge. The tutorial questions are so weird and vague, and I do not even understand some concepts the tutor says. For a student having got so many HDs in finance and accounting and economics unit, I do not think I lack the ablility to understand, it is the tutorial question bad. And the exam and assignment was very subjective. Never do this if you are not required to do this unit.
