I found that, as with the general expectations of Melbourne University, that this particular psychology subject was well-rewarding in having a consistent high standard across all lectures including by the 3 main lecturers (Elise, Brock, and Luke) with our guest lecturer (Lewis)! This is because I got to learn about theories that are quite tough to comprehend relating to emotions, cultures, pain, anonymity (all unique!), and wellbeing. Looking in retrospect, I believe that each module and all lectures tie in together nicely and all complement each other well so I feel coming out finishing a subject that this very great!. The insight was compelling and the research well-structured and thus presented with excellent detail and gravitas when appropriate. I appreciated the time and effort in the team and people involved in bringing this subject up to delivery. In regards of the content and material taught, the theory was noteworthy and I especially found that it was so insightful to learn because of how amazing the use and understanding of psychology can be in the real-world and that it's not just about learning theories with no application to society at all, but actually learning how to be a more well-rounded individual in an integrated yet paramount world of varying cultures. I liked how logical and problem-solving approaches to a discipline such as psychology can help us become more aware of the pressing debates of our ages. During tutorials, I believed they are fun and enjoyable especially if intellectual debates and scientifically backed empirical research are your thing (which I totally understand that not all may find it easy to digest at first!). Also, it was enlivening during classes to watch my tutor jet by with a pink sweater to celebrate pink-day-colours! Trends in Personality and Social Psychology really was structured in an approachable manner, like, for example, I believe that assignments were relevant and up-to-date with what's really important in modern day society. For instance, pain and depression and mental disorders can be linked with cultural values regarding what happiness means to it and emotions can be explained on the basis of three seperate theories yet there each have their own unique strengths as to where emotions come from, and whether wellbeing can be subjectively measured with accuracy and precision (which was the essay topic!), also the anonymity lecture was a delight to witness how people's attitudes online can change when flying under the radar! I liked to think and brainstorm during lectures and classes (tutes) which really helped me enjoy this psych level 3 subject and feel more intellectually stronger as an individual because all our staff and lecturers were really good at conveying intelligent ideas in a clearcut and concise manner (which I find very true at UniMelb always overall!). I find that learning with an academically strong environment is very rewarding on its own and plus the actual content of the subject consisting of well-rounded arguments for/against certain topics (such as the pros and cons of anonymity etc.) with a balance of data, facts, logic, and relevance really kept me keen and excited per every lecture and class I've attended and listened to on the go. I learnt to stay in my seat when the lecturers and tutors discussed really awesome topics or perspectives in tutes/lectures that actually gave me a surprise like with emotions having an ontological basis which is really cool to say aloud to my friends and family. Also the readings make me feel empowered to learn more because they are genuine, insightful and competently written by very insightful and competent unique individuals themselves! This was a great subject! I highly recommend it for anyone who finds that learning many different perspectives (esp. with the focus and concentration on psychology) on pressing issues is going to make them a better overall academic!I think there's not much to say here since the subject deliver kept at this level is very good and sufficient enough. I cannot find an actual reason to condemn, criticize, or complain about Trends In Personality And Social Psychology because it's been really high-quality, interesting, invigorating to study and learn about the new facts and skills that I feel I wouldn't get anywhere else asides from this SUBJECT! This, as such, applies with all subjects at Melbourne University. I suppose that another thing that I could do to improve my learning experience is for me to keep a fresh mind every time on debates and on views and values that differ from my own pre-existing ones.

This was the most interesting psych subject I took in my undergrad. The lecture content is quite diverse and I found the different topics very interesting. Mark was an absolute gem in the tutorials and made them very engaging. The paper review was quite challenging and required a lot of work, but the marking criteria is quite clear in what the expectations are, and my tutor Mark was very explicit in the caliber of writing required to achieve a H1 in the task by showing examples of his own writing. The task description was also explicit in what theories were required, but left enough room for you to form your own argumentation, making it neither too restrictive nor too loose and vague, which I quite liked. Though the essay task was on the tougher side, the exam was very fair. They released the short answers before the exam which was super helpful and the multiple choices were also very reasonable based on the lecture content. A H1 is quite achievable, and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in psychology as a discipline.

Totally agree with both past reviews, and I am taking this subject in 2024. Which makes me super unsure if the staff and coordinator(s) in charge of running this subject even acknowledge feedback provided by students at the end of semester. The essay outline was so abstract and vague. The amount of concepts, topics and theories we were expected to cover in the word limit was absurd and ridiculous. Agree the marking criteria was "wishy-washy".

While the content was relatively interesting, this subject shares one of the pitfalls of many personality/social/developmental psychology subjects of having terribly subjective and wishy-washy marking criteria for the essay assignment.

Content was very enjoyable and interesting, but lectures were long and dry at times. Practical classes had fun activities but apart from that, lacked in substance or importance for assessments. Worth doing if you enjoyed the Personality & Social Psychology from 2nd year as it solidifies and extends on that knowledge.
