Reviews

Probably the best level 3 biochem unit. There was a lab report (12%), mass spec data analysis worksheet (8%), group marketing/design project (20%) and online lab book (10%). There were 5 lab sessions in the last half of semester. For the lab book, they mark 2 out of the 5 entries you make (it is marked fairly and the feedback is always useful). The lab report really consolidated the labs and the data we accumulated. It required a lot of Excel usage but you end up with really cool looking figures. The unit coordinator (Luke) provided lots of useful feedback sessions for all assignments. You could also email him for feedback with was very considerate. The group project replaced the journal club this year (thank god) and it was immaculately well-designed. It's split into five 4% components and you learn so much about omics and mass spectrometry (complemented the lectures really well. The lectures were also very good. Five main topics were genomics, lipidomics/glycomics, metabolomics, systems biology and proteomics. Lots of details but its very relevant stuff and the learning outcomes and sample exams are useful. I think there was 2 sample exams floating around and they were really representative of the final. Some questions were even recycled which was good. But you really need to understand the content (I found metabolomics and proteomics a bit challenging to understand). But yeah, still a 5/5 unit as far as im concerned.

This was an interesting unit in terms of content. Scoring a HD is possible if you put in the effort and work and review the content regularly. Labs are alright and the assessments (the group presentation on journal article and lab report) is good, so if you score quite high on these assessments an HD is within reach, since you are not depending entirely on your exam.
