Reviews

I liked some of it but the research report was really awful and had multiple methodological and ethical issues that I felt i couldn't bring up, while at the same time I was not really enthused to write the report as it felt like bad science. There's some stuff to like in this unit but on the whole it's so blindingly unreflexive and it feels like everything I learnt was based on one study that wasn't replicated and I also wasn't given any skills to critically assess the concepts used. Comments on narcissism and even racism were really wishy-washy and didn't take in the multiple perspectives that exist outside of Australia / the Western World. As a psych unit it was really disappointing as I was hoping it would be more culturally sensitive while at the same time providing a lens of critical thinking on how psychology as a field is dedicated to reducing the human experience into a number of categories, usually at the total expense of viewpoints outside of this Western medical model. If any unit would have questioned this in the Psych department, it would have probably have been this one, but it doesn't. The way it tackles racism felt hokey and unconvincing and I have an issue with how much one of the professors relied on their own research as it felt really unscientific. To elaborate, I think anyone who sources themselves is doing a disservice because they are usually unable to see the flaws in their own arguments and logic. Some of it was interesting and some of it was nice, but on the whole it felt underbaked and a lot of the content seemed flimsy. At times I felt like I was being sold a placebo rather than anything helpful. Social psych is one of the worst offenders in the replication crisis and this unit didn't give me much faith in how social psychologists seem to be reflecting on this. But, YMMV. Your evaluation of this unit will come down to how you feel about psychology in general. If you think it's chill and useful to reduce people into categories, you'll love it, if you think it's not and you want to discuss that, you won't love it.

The final is super hard and just purely memorisation, but the mark is okay so I guess they do scale the mark... report is okay

Loved the lecturers and tutors. Loved the content. Assignments/exams were fair (if you did the work, you would do well). This was my favourite 2nd year psychology course. Only criticism was that lectures usually went over time due to the amount of content - was a bit too much to take in and study for.

Whilst the social lecturers are well thought out and engaging, the personality lectures can be difficult to follow and there is less guidance about what students are expected to 'take away' as examinable content.
