Unfortunately, this was the worst subject I've taken at university. The jump from Japanese 6 to Japanese 7 was enormous, with an overwhelming amount of new vocabulary and kanji introduced every week, making it difficult to keep up or even understand the lecture content. The lectures and seminars were unengaging, and there was little guidance on what was actually important to remember. Every class seemed to throw huge amounts of new vocabulary at students, and the teaching team made little effort to adapt the material to our level or make it more accessible. The only positive was that the subject provided continued exposure to Japanese, and because I forced myself to keep up with the vocabulary, I did end up learning many new words. However, I'd only recommend this subject if you're already very confident in your Japanese abilities or if you need it for your major rather than taking it as a breadth. Many of us struggled. I'm not exaggerating when I say you should be prepared to learn around 1,000+ new vocab over the semester. There were weeks where the readings and assignments felt overwhelming. Thankfully, the assessments were marked fairly imo. Also, the lecturer seemed to rely heavily on AI and didn't appear to put much effort into the teaching itself. It's a shame because I genuinely enjoyed studying Japanese up until this subject.
