Interesting subject

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2023

This subject was such a melting pot of science students from all disciplines just trying to fill a gap, so I appreciated the mixture of opinions. Nevertheless, the theory is a bit vague and there is little guidance on how to proficiently use the terminology in assignments. Expectations are very high.

The content was quite interesting and the workshops were quite engaging even though it was run over zoom. The assessments were a bit boring and quite obscure in terms of the expectations at times. Every essay and presentation felt repetitive and the marking was rather harsh. I didnt enjoy this subject as much as I'd hoped. If you think it will be easy based on reading the assessment briefs, think again. It's quite hard to score well in this subject.

This would be an EXCELLENT breadth subject. It is extremely broad and covers a lot of geographical concepts (most of which are covered in 1st and 2nd year Geography subjects). Unfortunately, it is meant to be 3rd year Geography subject, and thus leaves a lot to be desired. By trying to meld both human and physical geography, the subject is both repetitive and basic, as it tries to cover the basics to allow for people with no physical/human geography background. So although if does provide a broad understanding, it doesn't feel like any in-depth/specialised knowledge was imparted in this subject that couldn't be gained by taking a few 2nd year Geography subjects. But on a positive note: excellent lecturers and tutors. If you're looking for something interesting to fill up your timetable and enjoy writing a good case study as your final assessment, then this may be a good subject for you!

Do not take it thinking it is by looking at the assessment. The marking is absolutely ridiculous and the tutors have no idea what they are talking about.

VERY high-quality subject! No background knowledge needed as the course is so great at taking you from definining resilience and vulnerability right from the basics. Assignments were actually beneficial to our learning, lecture structure was great, tutorials actually teach you critical thinking skills through practical activities and not through monotonous slides! I took this as a second-year student and it has definitely opened me to a new way of critical thinking. Enter this subject with an open mind and curiosity to learn about disasters in all sorts of contexts and you will leave having learnt so much!

Great subject! Learnt a lot about concepts that I had never come across before. Make sure to scan the readings before you sign up for your presentation week because they are a bit of a hit or miss.

I really enjoyed this subject. It opened my eyes to a lot of the human issues and causes surrounding disasters and how they impact populations. The tutorial presentations were probably the worst part about this subject - my class was allocated papers to present on, and some were noticeably easier to do well with than others. As another reviewer said, it's important you pick a good case study that you will be interested in and able to write essays on.

fairly interesting subject, learning about lots of global disasters throughout human history with a particular focus on the concepts of 'vulnerability and resilience' - you pick a case study disaster to do the 2 main essays on, so pick a good one - overall a good subject
