Cellular metabolism and disease - it wasn’t as enjoyable as 2nd year biochem in terms of the content, since there was a lot more practical focus like working with data and the ‘how’ side of things are discovered rather than the knowledge itself haha MST1 - some details were a bit specific like knowing about glucokinase regulation if I remember correctly (but to be fair there was a whole slide on it in the lecture) - For module 3, rather than what was covered in the workshop, there was a lot more integration of knowledge from mod 1 and 2 like based on these symptoms, what’s the mechanism behind it e.g where’s the blockade. - Make sure you know how the ATPase works like the different subunits. - For module 4, pretty straightforward. There’s also a practice quiz in the workshop which was pretty similar difficulty. MST2 - Module 5: do not be tricked! There was a trick question. Just remember…if it wasn’t said in the lecture and even though it seems to make sense, probably isn’t the right option hahaha. Also good to know about the reasons/justifications for the different theories about insulin resistance. - As long as you went to the workshops for module 6 and 7, and heard when the lecturer said in the lecture videos ‘this might come up in the exam’, then you’ll be fine. Make sure you know about steady state stuff though. - Module 8: I know the lecturer doesn’t cover a lot of the stuff written in slides, but for the parts he does talk about then make sure you know it because there was one point he mentioned for like 3 seconds and it was tested…also, make sure you know what abbreviations represent e.g S6K the K is kinase since it might not be written in the abbreviation in the test. Exam - this exam felt very fair except that I focused wayyy to much of my study on the cancer modules 😅 - Also, just because workshop stuff was already tested in MSTs, doesn’t mean it won’t be tested again (esp for module 6 + 7) - For module 1, very similar to the past paper they provide you - For Andrew’s modules, he gives you practice questions in the workshops. Make sure you attempt them!!! - For module 11, make sure you know the different medications’ purposes and mechanism Assignments - assignment 1 + 2 straightforward - Assignment 3 I lost some marks and didn’t get feedback so I honestly can’t give too much advice

I love this subject! The materials are interesting, we learned a lot about diabetes & cancer (which I particularly like). Some lecturers are better than others, but I particularly love Kristin! However, as many of the reviews have mentioned, it is not really academically rewarding since it is quite hard to score well in the assignments. The MSTs were fair in difficulty, but the assignments can be difficult & it requires a lot of critical thinking! However, a good elective to think of doing if u're majoring in BCMB!

A very interesting but challenging subject. Most of the content was applicable to real life, and I particularly enjoyed learning about diabetes and cancer metabolism. Heather is a brilliant coordinator too - despite the transition to online learning, she handled everything extremely well - lectures were well-organised, all tutorials/extra Q&A sessions were recorded, and she responded to all concerns very quickly. The content of the lectures themselves flowed very well too. The exam was fair in terms of difficulty, but I (and many others) felt it was marked to a very high standard, so we were quite disappointed with our final grades (this was my lowest scoring BCMB subject). Overall, definitely an enjoyable subject, but perhaps not as rewarding as the other BCMB subjects (realistically I would rate this subject 4.5/5).

Absolutely loved this subject. They were able to give great feedback because there weren't many students. The content was all enjoyable and interesting because most of it can be directly related to your own life, particularly the diet, digestion, and immunometabolism sections. The assignment was also enjoyable - not something you can say about most subjects. The MSTs are mostly MCQ, and although the final exam was essay-style, they give very directed questions that are easy to answer if you payed attention to the lectures.
