This subject is a wonderful entry into learning not only about contemporary Chinese art, but how historical Chinese art media such as ink paintings have influenced modern Chinese art. The weekly readings, lectures and tutorials were interesting and well guided. The subject's focus on how art has been used politically throughout Chinese history provide a wonderful basis to Chinese contemporary history as well. Objects from the university collection such as historical art magazines and the artworks themselves were frequently made use of, which helped to contextualise the work we were doing. This subject does have a high percentage of international students, many with little experience with art history sometimes making class discussions awkward, but the tutor is able to guide discussions well regardless.
