Obviously you need a broad understanding of population health to do well in this unit. But more importantly, you need to know what the hell is being asked of you. The outline for the essay was unclear, which caused me to answer the question incorrectly and lose so many marks. Same for the photographic presentation. It's really important that you attend tutorials, as they can help you figure out what you're actually expected to know. Some of the lectures covered too much unimportant content, such as statistic verbatim. Luckily there's a lot of useful learning resources (required reading) on the LMS. I did okay for the final exam because I converted the unit learning outcomes into questions and typed up answers to all 3 past exam papers. I'd probably recommend the unit if you're majoring in health or biomedical health, but you can't expect to put this unit on the backburner. It's not an easy elective, and you're better off choosing a music elective if that's what you're looking for.

Very difficult unit for an elective. You lose so many marks prior to the exam on the essay, photographic presentation, and class participation if you're in a bad group. A lot of people answered the essay question incorrectly & the class average was 68%. The best thing about the unit was the coordinator (Ania) who is very resourceful and quick to respond if you have any questions. This is important, as it can save you from answering the essay question completely wrong. The exam is now nothing like past exam papers: it's much harder. You need a much deeper understanding of the unit content. Tutorial discussions are definitely examinable, so pay attention and note down what was said. Try to answer past exam papers under exam conditions , as it's very easy to run out of time at the exam. A Distinction is definitely achievable, but a HD is very hard if you chose this unit thinking it'd be easy.

Interesting subject and although there is lots of content you are not expected to wrote learn everything, it is more about remembering public health concepts than stats and biological processes. Gives a really good background into public health. To be honest I found the assignments a bit stupid and for a first year unit it wasn't made clear exactly what was wanted, but the exam was super easy - it is constructed in a way where you dont have to answer every question, you can just pick a few to answer out of some choices so if you aren't 100% confident on some topics its fine

Nice subject, is quite content heavy though. Lectures can be quite time consuming, for example in one week we had 5 x 40 min lectures. Tutorials were good too. Exam was open book and the questions were straightforward as well. The essay and photo essay were very easy to get good marks for.

Fairly interesting but has a lot of content. Exam is open book though and assessments were pretty easy to get a good mark in. Tutorials can be fun

I took PUBH1101: Health and Illness in Human Populations as an elective - it was actually very interesting! For anyone taking this subject, I have some greatly detailed notes to support your assessments/exams.
