“Beating the odds; success stories of WA entrepreneurs”

The evening will feature a Q&A-style discussion hosted by Azure Capital’s Chairman John Poynton AM covering:
• Career perspective and experiences, with a focus on entrepreneurship;
• Identifying and capitalising on business opportunities; and
• Overcoming the challenges of becoming an entrepreneur.

Panellists include industry leaders Michael Smith (Chairman, iiNet), Chris Ellison (Managing Director and Co-Founder, Mineral Resources), Rod Jones (Group CEO and Managing Director, Navitas) and Adrian Fini (Director, FJM Property). You will have the opportunity to ask questions to the panellists and participate in the discussion, as well as network with our panellists and the Azure team. Refreshments will be provided.

ABOUT OUR PANELLISTS

Michael Smith

Michael is the Chairman and non-executive director of iiNet. He is currently the Principal of Black House, a boutique strategic development consulting firm. Michael’s contributions at the board level are considerable. He is the chairman of the Lionel Samson Sadleirs Group, Pioneer Credit and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is also the deputy chairman of Automotive Holdings Group and 7-Eleven Australia Pty Ltd. Previously, Michael held roles as the Chair of Synergy, Verve, the Perth International Arts Festival, chairman of the West Coast Eagles, Indian Pacific Limited and Scotch College. In March of 2014, he was awarded a Doctor of Letters from the University of Western Australia for his contributions to the business sector and the arts.

Chris Ellison

Chris has over 30 years’ experience in the mining contracting, engineering and resource process industries and is the founding shareholder of each of the three original subsidiary companies that comprises Mineral Resource Limited - Crushing Services International Pty Ltd, PIHA Pty Ltd and Process Minerals International Pty Ltd. Throughout his career, Chris has founded and acted as managing director for multiple companies, including Karratha Rigging in 1979, Genco Ltd in 1986 and PIHA Pty Ltd in 1992. In 1988, he was appointed as the managing director of the Monadelphous group and under his management, the group successfully traded out of their financial difficulties. He is currently the managing director of Mineral Resources Limited and a non-executive director of Mesa Minerals Limited.

Rod Jones

Rod has over 30 years’ experience in educational administration and has previously held positions as the deputy director of the Tertiary Institute Services Centre and the Secondary Education Authority in Western Australia. As the CEO and co-founder of Navitas, he has been instrumental in the expansion and development of the company’s model into the various markets in which it now operates. Rod’s contribution to the development of the international education sector both in Australia and overseas has been recognised through receiving an honorary Doctor of Education from Edith Cowan University in April 2007 as well as being named the 2008 Australian Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

Adrian Fini

Adrian Fini is Director of FJM Property Pty Ltd, a private property and investment group. He has been involved in the Perth property industry for over 30 years. Adrian is a current Board member of the University of Western Australia Business School Board and committee member for UWA’s Strategic Planning Board and their New Century Campaign, Chair of the Art Gallery of WA Foundation. He is also a Board member of Giving West and was awarded an OAM for his contributions to the arts in 2014. He also was also co-founded independent brewery, Little Creatures.

John Poynton AM

John is a Director of the Future Fund Board of Guardians and Crown Perth. In the not-for-profit arena, John is the Chairman of Council of Christ Church Grammar School, Giving West and Celebrate WA. He is also a member of Social Ventures Australia. Previously, John was a Chairman of ASX Perth, Fleetwood, Alinta and the West Australian Museum Foundation – Deputy Chairman of Austal Limited – Director of Multiplex; Member of the Higher Education Endowment Fund Advisory Board, Payments System Board of the Reserve Bank of Australia and of the Business School at the University of Western Australia. John is a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia and is a past recipient of a WA Citizen of the Year award in the industry and commerce category.
