UTS AUSTRALS TRIALS

WHAT IS AUSTRALS?

Australs is the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships. It is a 7 round tournament held in Australs Style (3v3 with replies)

It's like Easters but bigger, and further away. There are also so novice/pro restrictions in Australs, which means most teams are 3 Pros, so the tournament is highly competitive.

This year, UTS has been allocated two teams (6 debaters) and one adjudicator position. For a total of 7 participants from UTS.

Australs will be hosted at Solbridge, South Korea. See this link to their facebook page – make sure you like it for updates: https://www.facebook.com/Australasians2015?fref=ts

WHEN IS AUSTRALS?

Australs will be from the 15th-22nd of July. (Over UTS semester break)

HOW MUCH WILL AUSTRALS COST?

The UTS Debating Society will be able to provide a subsidy to participants, however flights to South Korea, and part of the registration fee will need to be paid by the attendees. More information will be released closer to trial dates.

HOW DO I GO TO AUSTRALS?

Trials ofcourse! Trials this year will be held on the 16th and 17th of May.

Debater Trials: All trialling debaters will have to participate in atleast three (3) trial debates. The teams, speaking position and motions will be allocated by the external trial adjudicator, TBA and ranked based on their performance.

Adjudicator Trials: All trialling adjudicator will be required to watch a debate, either live or recorded and prepare notes and an adjudication. They will then be interviewed by an external trial adjudicator (TBA) and ranked based on their performance.

For the full trial policy please see this link:

HOW DO I TRIAL?

We encourage everyone and anyone to trial! Trials will be much more competitive than Easters trials, as there are far less positions available, however there is no harm in having a go.

Good luck and looking forward to seeing you there!
