Backstage

Auditions for the FINAL production of UTS Backstage are here already! You know what that means, it’s your LAST CHANCE to be a part of Backstage 2016.

Van Badham’s play is a modern, Australian work about three artists living in a share house in Surry Hills, Sydney. Each of them is trying to make it as something, between the three of them they aspire to be an actor, a writer and a musician. It explores the struggles involved in seeking paid work, meeting Centrelink criteria, while simultaneously creating their best artistic work.

Kim, an ambitious writer, has recently lost her scholarship for university as a result the household budget becomes even tighter. To compensate for this, they decide to rent out the upstairs attic to Dave, a published writer and aspiring musician. Dave’s sexual presence and Kim’s ‘lowered’ social status create tensions.

Dole Diary by Van Badham will be directed by Anna Rushmer, produced by Asha Ray, with publicity by Tooba Anwar.

Characters:
Female: 3
Male: 2

Kim Dash: female, 23.
Hard working and high achieving. Kim has a set plan for her life and is used to being rewarded for her efforts. The play is centered around this plan falling apart.

Aspiring actor, a bit happy-go-lucky, keeps out of conflicts and often acts as a moderator.

Lainie Mala: female, 25.
Once an aspiring musician, however, became very cynical after her own and other’s continual failures.

Grant Cheeseman: male, 26.
Jock-turned-stock broker, has contempt for anyone who cannot achieve in the same way he has. He has little regard for the arts and even less for people living on the dole.

Dave Brodie: male, 32.
Overtly confident, sexualizes everything in a way that is repulsive as well as seductive.

All auditions will take place in a group setting with opportunities for actors to audition as more than one character. We’d prefer if you could go off-book, but since there is limited notice and we might switch up the roles on the day, this is not a necessity.

To book an audition, please fill out the form on the google drive in the audition package.
