Golden Gavel Competition
[ǰuΣt fɔr lolΣ]

A prestigious public speaking competition, mixing 3-5 minute speeches, edgy topics and young lawyers.

1. Informal: Where Lord Denning-esque prose meets Harvey Specter-like wit, infused with a hint of sarcasm.
2. Origin: Late 20th century oratory based on legal topics, derived from young or aspiring lawyers (originally: Sydney, 1993, in the sense ‘get up and make some lawyers giggle’).

By popular demand, NSW Young Lawyers is offering a talented law student the chance to enter the Golden Gavel Competition on Friday 19th May 2017.

Registration by: Saturday 25th March, 9am
UTS auditions: Tuesday 28th March, 6pm

The UTS winner will be invited to attend the Student Round of the Golden Gavel, which will be held at the NSW Law Society Office in the evening of Tuesday 18th April, and if successful will then go on to compete at the Golden Gavel Competition.

Information on how to register for the UTS audition can be found here:

All UTS Law Students are encouraged to apply, from first to final year. Speeches require little by way of legal knowledge. Rather, speakers must be flexible enough to craft a speech on a given topic and keep an audience entertained.

We also encourage all students to attend the UTS auditions on Tuesday 28th March at 6pm. The location will be announced closer to the date.
