UTAS ThinkTank #1
8 March, 2017
Menzies Institute for Medical Research
Welcome to the first TUMSS/ IMPACT ThinkTank for 2017!
The Australian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA)'s key mandate is to connect, inform and represent Australia’s 17,000 medical students. AMSA policies, discussed at council in late March are used to tell AMSA how to advocate to medical schools, politicians, and other organisations.
At this, the first UTAS ThinkTank of 2017, get to have your say in the decisions that AMSA will make, as we discuss:
Whether the compulsory 12 month deferral for MSM (men who have sex with men) to donate blood is discriminatory?
How far does a Dr's right to conscientiously object to performing a procedure (eg. termination of pregnancy) go?
Should we learn about complementary and alternative medicine in our degree?
How much foreign aid should Australia contribute?
Should there be a minimum requirement of Global Health teaching in our curriculum?
Do we need a policy on the role of Medical Student Societies?
Come along to Rm206 and chuck in your two cents on these issues and more! When we vote on AMSA policy at council, we want to accurately represent UTas students, based on what you say here.
All of the policies being discussed (and a handy summary document) can be accessed here if you want to read ahead - feel free to make comments on the sides of the documents too, or bring comments to discuss at the Thinktank. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B1-1tSDsnnJWSndaVFZtaFZmOVE
Some food will be provided, and attendees are highly encouraged to supplement this by bringing a plate of delicious nibbles.
No experience is necessary - just come along and give us a piece of your mind!
If you’re up North, do not despair - there will be video-linkage! Launceston students, swing by the LCS Boardroom, and Burnie, pop by the Tutorial room!
PS One guaranteed rego spot will be given out! Only requirement is to attend and 'like' the Sydvention Facebook page!
Hope to see you all there!
