Reviews

PSYC1001 is an excellently organised course! A lot of attention is paid to helping first years navigate the University system of education. So thats great! It covers A LOT of content, like a broad brush of many famous studies, and researchers from the past. I (and many others) find it very interesting. You will be disappointed if you're expecting anything like "Abnormal Psychology" however. The quizzes and Essay are reasonable. Don't underestimate the multiple choice exam. Many have failed. Don't do this course if you are expecting to bludge. It is interesting, well rounded and good for Science or Arts stream students.

It is a cool beginning psych class. Interesting topics.

This subject was very interesting, and it was organised in a superb way! I appreciated the fact that every lecturer made an effort to engage with the class. Looking at eyewitness memory and lie detection was interesting with Celine. Social psychology was great with Rebecca, with lots of famous experiments being shown. The personality lectures were awesome with Jo, she explains things very clearly. Micah is a wonderful lecturer who made developmental psychology easy to understand. Caleb has his examples, but never fails to engage the class and teaching us to appreciate statistics and what science actually is. I liked the way Frans spoke about things in the history of psychology, and it was never boring! I absolutely loved the tutorials! My tutor Megan was very sweet, always happy and full of enthusiasm, which brightened up the tutorials. The online quizzes with unlimited attempts were a great resource, and I loved participating in research experiments! Lots of help given for writing the research report, such as the exemplar quiz, the FAQ document, but most importantly, the clear marking rubric telling us what is good and what is bad for each section of the report. There was much more help this time around (compared to when I did PSYC1002 in 2014), so well done. Don't underestimate the 100 multiple choice questions in the final! All in all, there's lots to learn, but it was an incredible and memorable course - one of the best electives I've ever taken! Give it a try.

Don't expect to glide through this subject. There's a few layers of content, but it is so fulfilling and rewarding to go through it all and come out on top. The lecturors all have their quirks that are both good and bad, but in the end I enjoyed each lecturer intensely. The tutorials are somewhat useless, but good for locking in key definitions and helping out with assignments and such. Everyone from tutors to lecturers to past alumni will tell you that it is an intensely hard subject, but they are just saying this to make sure you do well, it's not that bad. Just stay on top of things. Great subject.

Don't do this subject as am elective/filler. Only do it if you have to. The content is very heavy and the essay isn't marked very favourably.

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2015

It was pretty good overall, however some lectureres weren't as engaging as one would have wished. Tutorials were pretty much a waste of time and quite boring to say the least. Content and assignments were really interesting though.

If you work hard, you will do well and set a great foundation for studying a psychology major. This unit covers a range of aspects of psychology, but manages to make each topic interesting and informative.

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2014

Such an intense course, but so fascinating. Loved it.

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2015

Organisation is superb, quizzes and participation are a great way to earn marks and the assignment (if you start early!) isn't too bad (although next year it's a report so much better!). Lectures overall were pretty good (except the developmental ones...) just make sure you go to them to avoid a mad rush in Stuvac (no visuals on recordings). DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE EXAM. It may all be multiple choice, but we're talking like mini paragraph answers where one word changes. Know your stuff for it in detail!

Started out only doing this subject for a breath of fresh air, but after completing it I've decided I want to major in it (along with 2 other subjects). Incredibly interesting and immensely rewarding if you put in the work. Easy 10% just by attending 5 hours of research participation and completing an online quiz every 2/3 weeks (unlimited attempts). Also, if you know the lectures well, the final 100 MC will be a walk in the park. Definitely recommend; even if you don't intend on majoring in it.
