Reviews

better than expected. some lectures were better/made more sense than others (looking at you, poststructuralism). content was, overall, quite interesting and manageable if you keep up with weekly readings. marking for essays weren't too bad - follow the marking rubric and you'll do well.

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2023

way too theory-heavy for an intro course. Some lectures were unbelievably dry and theoretical. Literally talking about quuantam physics at one point. That is not a joke.

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2022

The reviews here are correct. Lectures (2/5) Very mixed bag depending on which lecture is good. I only paid attention to the realism and liberalism week because there was a lot of discussion around the Ukraine War, Iraq War and previous wars. Just remember the key tenets of each theory and you'll be fine Assessment (3.5/5) Honestly the assignments were pretty straightforward because of the level of detail of instructions here. Much better than introduction to politics. However avoid Minglu when it comes to marking. So glad I had a good tutor to help me find strong case studies to lift my marks. Honestly learnt the entirety of the course content just by doing the assessment. Coursework (1/5) Very incredibly dry course work but much better than intro to politics.

Some of the lecturers were good. Some of them weren't. The assignments were incredibly boring. But could have been worse. I just hope later IR subjects are more captivating.

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2021

extremely poor unit. extremely dry, had different lecturers every single week making the unit have no focus. poorly organised. made me drop my international relations major.

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2018

really awful - poorly ran, bad marking, too theoretical, and a really average coordinator

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2020

this course is an absolute shambles. teaching by the main lecturer consisted mostly of references to videos of her giving old talks at other universities. coursework is unbelievably dry. assessments border on unreasonable. if you have even an iota of self respect, and it isn’t a prerequisite for later study, i can only advise that you avoid taking this course.

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2020

Too much of a focus on history which could have been used to explain contemporary examples. Assessments weren't bad though.

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2018

Very poorly organised. Not focused around contemporary issues, just on theories, so very dry.
