Great foundation course in Chemistry. Lecturers are knowledgeable and willing to help students. Labs are fun and help with the development of fundamental lab skills. Also really loved that there was open access to past exam papers and quizzes were really useful in gauging understanding of concepts.

Really great introduction for those students who didn't do Chemistry in high school. The first few weeks might feel a little easy, but it's very important to pay attention because it gets more complicated very quickly! The best thing about this subject is the resources. There are weekly homework and problem sheets, tutorials, links to useful online tools and workshops, etc. If you're feeling lost, there's always tonnes of material there to help you. #1 Tip: Don't fall behind! Chemistry, perhaps more than any other first year science, is a subject which builds upon itself. You can understand how a lung works well enough even if you missed the kidney lecture, for instance. You can get a good idea of gravity even if you missed electromagnetics. But in Chem, you need to know everything!

Chem1001 was a great subject. I had no previous chemistry experience however I found the lectures understandable because they proceeded at a nice pace. The labs were very interesting and I loved that the experiments were very basic, they really inspired a sense of awe and wonder.

This course gets hard and fast very unexpectedly. I think my biggest tip to everyone doing this course is to not be fooled by how easy the course starts off. It will pick up very quickly. The assessments and labs are easy. The final exam is very very difficult. I personally thought it was unfair to make the assessments so easy and then to have such a difficult exams. However overall you will develop a solid foundation in chemistry to take you further in your degree. It gets you up to speed with the kids who are taking CHEM1101 :)

Manageable subject with clear teaching. I had no chem or maths background and found it alright. DEFINITELY do the "suggested exam questions" weekly throughout the semester, especially if you have no maths or chem background. You will thank yourself during the exam.

I think there were too many labs during the semester. Maybe one per fortnight is a bit more reasonable. Course was run well but as a suggestion, I thought the lecturers could have at least gone through 1 or 2 exam papers in class to give the students a feel for the style of questions to be given. There are approximately 10 exam papers loaded from previous years so you can't go too much wrong. If you did high school chemistry (and did OK) the subject should be fairly straight forward. (Except maybe a few more calculations)

Hard exam but well run course with lots of help available

I found the subject to be quite good for most of the semester - the lecturers are fantastic along with all the extra resources at our disposal. Adrian and Brendan made the 3 consecutive 9 am lectures worth our while. It is a difficult course but definitely doable - the weekly online lecture quizzes, lab component and tute quizzes should pull you through (I did terribly in the final exam).

There was a lot of extra help with this subject which was great. Despite this the difficulty of the final exam was unexpected.

CHEM1001 is mostly a pretty straight forward and course, and the basic concepts are explained well by the lecturers. However, some parts of the course require some mathematics (e.g., squaring, square roots, inverse, multiplication, division, solving equations). The chemistry lecturers are generally all really helpful and good at explaining, with the exception of a one or two who lack in the teaching skills department. So make sure to ask the lecturers if you have any doubts at the end of each lecture. There is a worksheet for every lecture, to help you understand concepts, and calculate very basic and simple questions. Attending the tutorials are a must to learn how to do the harder calculations. There are also a few tutorial quizzes throughout the year that model the types of questions you get in the final exam. The 3 hour labs are completely irrelevant to the rest of the course, and are not examinable. But you do get a lab mark that goes towards your final mark.
