A few months ago it seemed unthinkable. The reality is however that billionaire Donald Trump, dismissed by many as a deranged, toupee-wearing lunatic, is today favourite to win the Republican Party’s nomination for the 2016 US Presidential election.

A man who wants to ban all travel by Muslims to the US, who would build a wall along the entire length of the US’s border with Mexico (and charge the Mexicans for it), and deport all 11 million undocumented migrants in the US, could soon be president of the most powerful country on earth.

How did it get to this? In this meeting we examine the economic, social and political dynamics shaping the current, highly polarised, presidential race in the US, with a view to understanding the rise of Trump and his brand of populist far-right politics.

All welcome for talk and discussion.
