Reviews

Withdrew from this subject, but it's a good subject if you're not very maths inclined. If you're smart at maths though (i.e. 37+ raw methods) or interested in maths in any capacity I'd definitely recommend at least trying the maths pathway if you're in commerce, even if you didn't do spesh. The commerce maths subjects are definitely more of a plug and chug/surface-level type of maths and you'll likely feel a hollow feeling whilst studying it if you like to scrutinise the details and understand why things are the way they are. Overall a good subject for what it's meant to be though - well run and pretty useful.

Easy peasy, just don’t think too hard, lecture slides are pretty self-explanatory

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2022

Super, super dry content. The lecturer was very unclear with his explanations and the concepts made no sense to me.

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2020

Sucked at methods but this ended up being the most easy to understand out of the other core commerce subjects. Don't lose hope and shoutout to David for being an awesome lecturer & Cam for being an awesome tutor!

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2020

Teaches bare basics of stats and pretty useful. Dont overestimate very h1able, also dont underestimate. Knowledge of yr 12 futher and spesh serve be to be quite useful but not essential.

very helpful lecturers and tutors - the discussion board was amazing!

I like this subject the most out of other subjects that I took in this semester. The lecturer and tutor (at least mine) are very dedicated. The content was taught very clear in the lecture and tutorial improved my understanding of the concepts. This subject also helped me so much with my psychology that relates to research method. Assignments, tests and final exam are okay if you work hard for it.

Good introductory to statistics that will be helpful throughout a commerce degree. Generally well taught although the content is not very deep.

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2017

A very useful understanding of statistics and data in a business setting. I found this subject very informative and it pairs well with the other first year commerce subjects. The content is challenging but not too hard.

This subject covers the core concepts which underpin quantitative decision analysis in the various specialisations within the faculty. It provides a foundation for all second-year quantitative subjects in the commerce degree. The topics covered are drawn from financial mathematics; measures of location and dispersion; probability, random variables and expected values; sampling design; estimation and testing using the normal and t-distribution; and simple regression and correlation. Excel is used to illustrate applications in accounting, economics, finance, management and marketing.
