I found the Discrete Maths content extremely interesting. However, I found the Operations Research content extremely difficult to follow (which was not made better by the lecturer). Assessment was reasonable though.

This subjects requires some knowledge you know from linear algebra. Gets you to understand Simplex Methods about 60% and 40% of it are the discrete component which a lot of times were very hard to understand. Doing it online was dealing with Perusal and Roam Research which is an another way to communicate students who have any problems in this subject (unless your confident to ignore both of them). Alysson encourages us to do his best to help us understand the subject better and the recent exam has slightly changed compared to the previous years he has been taught and the assignments were some of them were pulled from the textbook accessing from the Perusal link. The couple of the assignments were just 500 words no higher and above type of essays or reflections to give some sort of opinions and knowledge relating to the topics that we covered and the last assignment was a practise exam consisting 6 questions. Luckily your given a one doubled A4 sheet in the end and I only practised the 2019-2014 papers only. And if you are lucky if he did pulled some questions from the previous exam papers you might be in a surprise. I give it 3.5 to be honest for this subject if only studentvip allows us to give half star ratings.

If you could take one math subject as a CSS major, it'd have to be this. Best maths subject I've taken in undergrad uni. Really interesting content (graph theory, game theory, mathematics behind voting etc.). The optimisation half of the course is super relevant to industry, very useful for any analyst position. Tutes are very useful in guiding study and there is a decent amount of extra study material available. Previous exams indicative of current exam content/structure, and pretty easy to study for. Armed with this subject's knowledge, you can now divide cake between 3 people and each person would not be envious of the other's portion.

Tutor was not interested in being there, lecturer was good but tended to speak in monotone which became very boring.

A very interesting subject but you need to keep on top of things so that you dont fall behind.

Great subject. Charl's a great lecturer though it did get a bit awkward at times when he insisted on audience participation. Relatively easy compared with other 2nd year maths subjects. The Operations Research half can get a bit tedious at times since in real life you would use a computer, but at least it gives a good understanding of the how and the why. The Discrete Maths half of the subject was really interesting, especially the social choice section. Overall an interesting and quite accessible 2nd year maths subject. Would recommend to pretty much anyone!
