Reviews

Awful assessments with little to no guidance, teaching staff are very lazy (reusing lectures from 2020, leaving the tutorials halfway through with nothing for us to do). Avoid like the plague.

Grade: 95. Content wasn't my personal favourite, especially the later half with cell migration and the cytoskeleton, I found those modules too superficial and dry. However, Diana is a wonderful coordinator and both her and Jose were standouts in content and delivery in the workshops. The assignments are very well written and feedback has been great. Yes, it's quite content heavy but Diana and Jose take over half of the content and they both explain things in a manner which makes it very enjoyable to learn and easy to understand (had it been anyone other than those two I probably would have rated this much lower), not to mention all 3 assignments are marked by Diana, who's a very fair marker. I found the exam quite fair, although some questions were trickier and required deep understanding of the content and how to apply it to a broad range of scenarios. I would recommend this subject to anyone interested in cell biology. It is geared towards biochem majors though, so having a biochem background would help, but its not super necessary beyond BCMB20002. Even with the heavy load of content, 80+ is very achievable if you keep up with the content, go to the workshops and put in effort into the assignments (the essay is especially important as its worth 20%, but Diana provides you with an extensive rubric and instructions on what to do). Great subject, but not my favourite out of the BCMB dept.

The content of this subject is indeed very interesting (particularly endocytosis, cellular stress, cancer cell migration), although it is very content heavy. Thankfully, since I did this subject during COVID, I didn't have to worry about remembering everything, which was good. However, the transition to online learning wasn't particularly smooth - we were pretty much left on our own throughout the semester (except for the last 2-3 weeks), which was quite disappointing since it seems that the coordination was quite good before COVID (realistically I would rate this subject 4.5/5). But thankfully, we were compensated with a relatively straightforward exam, so everything worked out in the end.

Very well coordinated subject with good content building to an extent on the content in BCMB20003. Very interesting and engaging lecturers.
