Took this online during the Winter Term of 2021. Monique was great, but the online format just wasn't too good sadly. I assume it would've been far more engaging in-person.

Grade: 84. I've never been a fan of essays and as a science student I was very intimidated by the amount of readings that comes with arts subjects, but it was so good! I agree with the others reviewers, Monique is an amazing lecturer and coordinator, the subject was brilliantly coordinated. The content is incredibly interesting and as someone that loves reading re-tellings, it was great to get close to the primary texts where it all started. The document analysis and research essay were honestly fun to do, and I had a good time researching a topic that interested me (and I think my grades reflected that). This was my first H1 for a non-science subject and I am so happy. There's also 6-7 small quizzes comprising MCQ/1 SAQ every other week which were all about the lecture content and really easy. And the take home exam is a bit of a mix of research essay and weekly quizzes where you have to write an essay based on the lecture content and show what you've taken from the subject, and the topics to choose from were all interesting. The only downside was that people very rarely actually did the readings, and it was always the same 3-4 people contributing to discussions. My tutor did the best he could to try to get people to contribute but some literally didn't even respond when called and it was so awkward. But obv this is not the fault of the staff or the subject, the content of this subject is really interesting and I do recommend it, even if you've never done classics before. But if you really want to get the most of out the subject, make sure you do at least the primary readings, that's what the seminars focus on, it will help you with your assessment analysis as well, and it will make the subject a lot more fun when you can actually have discussions in class. This was not an easy h1 by any means, but its very achievable if you do the readings and put in a bit of work into it.

Monique is an amazing tutor and I thoroughly enjoyed this subject. As a winter subject, it was definitely fast paced but very engaging too.

I really enjoyed this subject. The content is quite overwhelming in terms of the weekly reading material, particularly if you've never studied classics before. The assessment was fair & I appreciated how interactive the feedback was from my tutor, Emily. She was very engaging and passionate about the subject. The online lectures can get a bit tedious but apart from that, a really enjoyable subject!

Awesome subject, might be a bit overwhelming if you haven't studied classics before, but would still be super fun either way, just be prepared for a lot of names and words being thrown around which you won't be familiar with. Learning about ancient cultures through the texts and art they made is an awesome way to learn, and this subject has a wide variety of content and perspectives to study. Monique is an amazing tutor, would highly recommend her. The exam and research essay were fair and sometimes fun, but it's very easy to get bogged down in the citations, which they take extremely seriously. Aside from that, amazing subject.
