Melbourne International Relations Society

Come join the Melbourne International Relations Society as we usher in our first major event series for the year with special guest Professor John Langmore giving the opening address. Every fortnight, we will be hearing from academics and professionals from diverse fields from US foreign policy to rural microfinance, from feminist theory to the practicalities of public administration.

Professor Langmore will be speaking on the United Nations Security Council and the potential for reform as it works to cope with a world that is rapidly shifting its centre of gravity. As a topic currently being discussed by the UNSC and the United Nations at large, this is a topical look at the inner workings of the international order from one of the University of Melbourne's most senior academics.

Professor Langmore was Director of the UN Division for Social Policy and Development in New York for five years and then Representative of the International Labour Organization to the United Nations for two. He was responsible for the organisation of the 24th special session of the General Assembly which was the first world conference to agree on the global target for halving serious poverty by 2015.

At present he is researching and publishing on global governance, Australian foreign policy, conflict resolution, and development.

Light refreshment will be served and additional drinks will be available at bar prices at the upstairs area of Jimmy Watson. Afterwards you can pop on by MIRS's Bi-Weekly Drinks at The Shaw Davey Slum and drink some more !!!
