While the Liberals have now won a majority in Parliament the election outcome demonstrated how weak and divided the Liberal Government is. Immigration Minister Peter Dutton almost lost his own seat with his comments about refugees being illiterate ending up being a real liablity than a vote winner. Disturbingly Racist Pauline Hanson’s One Nation won two Senate seats while the Greens ended up losing one Senate seat. There are possibilities to use the weaker Liberal Government to build stronger fights against their agenda of education deregulation, offshore processing and medicare cuts - but this needs to go beyond parliament to movements that mobilise masses of ordinary students and workers. All welcome for this lunchtime talk + discussion!
