Shigley’s Mechanical Engineering Design is intended for students beginning the study of mechanical engineering design. Students will find that the text inherently directs them into familiarity with both the basics of design decisions and the standards of industrial components. It combines the straightforward focus on fundamentals that instructors have come to expect, with a modern emphasis on design and new applications. The tenth edition maintains the well-designed approach that has made this book the standard in machine design for nearly 50 years. Specific statistical material pertinent to the 10th edition was retained and integrated within the sections that utilize statistics. A few examples are:
  • The mathematical relationship between the design factor and reliability is covered in the first chapter of Introduction to Mechanical Design where the design factor and reliability are defined and discussed.
  • In Sec. 2-2, The Statistical Significance of Material Properties, is totally self-contained.
  • The statistical Weibull distribution is necessary in the chapter on Rolling-Contact Bearings and is completely contained within this chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best made better still

There are many general Engineering Handbooks; Marks' is the best. This is slightly different. I've never found any other book that quite fills the niche Shigley did in the various editions of his work which led to this. it covers most of the technical material you need to actually do good mechanical engineering design. Gears, mechanism, strength of design, etc. There are better books on each individual subject, but no others I've seen that bring it all together into useful processes.

This bulks out Shigley's earlier work with new and in some cases more detailed material.

Worthy of a place on any Designer's desk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great professional resource, minor typo in 10 edition

Bought this a long time ago for a mechanical design engineering course and still use it as a reference for engineering work.

I wanted to leave (and update) this review to list any typo that I've found in Shigleys Mechanical Engineering Design 10 edition.

In example 7-1 on page 363, the solution mentions Table 6-6 to find the reliability endurance modifier; it is supposed to be Table 6-5.

2.0 out of 5 stars Non è la versione che avevo ordinato!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook for mechanical engineering students and working engineers!

Exactly what I needed. One of the very few books that I actually purchased and I'm planning to keep this book not just throughout university but throughout my career. It's very neat and has been organized well in terms of chapters, appendices, figures, etc. Imperial and metric units in this book.

I personally prefer this textbook way more over the Design of Machine Elements by Spotts. I've used both and I think Shigley's is far superior.

Only downside is that it's heavy and expensive. Not much you can do about that. It's an engineering textbook.
