5.0 out of 5 stars Apprendre Java par les Applets

5.0 out of 5 stars Very basic; for begineers
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book was my introduction to Java applets. This review (2014) finds that the syntax and structure are still the same. Unfortunately, the role of the applet has changed drastically since the book was written. The applet is not much of a player in the modern world; but the need for applet programming skills remains. The book is well written, covering all the basics (in a logical order). Good book to have on your shelf.

Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe book is pretty good, it is a bit confusing to me probably because I just started learning java and never took any other computer classes before. It has the basics that I need in my intro to java class.

2.0 out of 5 stars This book left me stumped at almost every turn.
Verified PurchaseI started programming in Java with a very optimistic state of mind. At the beginning of my Computer Science degree, I took two Microsoft SQL server classes and got A's putting little to no effort forth. Because of this, I thought programming and other Computer Science related things would come relatively easy to me. This book took away my optimism almost immediately. First off, the author does a poor job of explaining how to perform very simple actions in Java. I found myself stuck and unable to find the answers to my questions in my projects. Does this book teach you basic things about Java? Yes. But, it forgets to teach so many essentials in Java that I can't honestly say I'd recommend it. This book pretty much taught me to hate Java, which sucks because it's a very strong programming language. I'd love to learn Java with someone who can show me the ins and outs, someone who can answer questions. Sadly, I didn't have that in my class. But, if I can't learn with the book, then that tells me something is wrong. I've self taught myself Python and I relied almost entirely on the book with SQL, so I know these things can be learned without an instructor.
Anyway, I have to give this book two star rating. I was going to give one star, but I figured some of my opinion is influenced by the quality of the class I was in. I don't want to rate anything but the quality of the book here, so I bumped it up a star.
If you're taking a class on Java, this book may leave you stumped. You're going to need to rely heavily on the internet and your fellow classmates to solve problems. I strongly suggest a study partner or a tutor if you do plan on using this book. I hope this review is helpful, and I also hope I haven't turned anyone away from Java.

1.0 out of 5 stars Java Applets are deprecated
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book is horrendous if you are coming in not knowing anything about Java before. It doesn't explain the bare essentials of what you need to know about java itself and will most likely fluster those who have never programmed before. Also, the knowledge this book provides on Java Applets is useless in the first place because they are now deprecated, after the security scare that came a few years ago with them, and now most browsers no longer support them and will not run them unless you go deep into your computer settings and enable the URL at which you want to run them at. And even then they still do not run well and have many issues with crashing and having to refresh the page.
However, what this book does right is have lots of examples, lots and lots of them. Just explaining how to do something isn't enough, its important to also show it in action, and is something I wish other computer science textbooks had as well. But, I am only giving it one star because despite the stellar amount of examples I want to make it clear that getting this textbook to study is useless because Java Applets are deprecated. If you want to make web applets its better to go and learn Javascript (Khan Academy has some nice tutorials on that), and for Java Applications, Cave of Programming offers a great free Java for Beginners course for that, as well as countless other courses like C++ and SQL.
