5.0 out of 5 stars Developmentally Appropriate Way to Teach Spelling
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI think this is the best Words Their Way volume by far. It explains clearly, step-by-step, how to assess children's spelling ability and group them for spelling instruction. Then it goes on to explain how to help kids learn to spell. All materials, including a DVD, are included with the book. Instruction is based on using the discovery method where students notice features in words, rather than having the teacher point out features. I've had great success using this book to teach the spelling list that was handed out in my school two years ago by reorganizing the words to fit the Words Their Way concept.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spelling and Reading
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIt's been shown that spelling provides a window to one's reading. This book explains the developmental stages children go through K- adult. The database software on one of the CDs that allows one to analyze the spelling inventories and sort the results is very easy to use. Classroom teachers appreciate the data I have been able to give them on their students. The word games and short videos on the 2nd CD are very helpful. The analytical phonics approach is very kid-friendly right up through high school. This is a very thorough resource that every ELA, SpEd, and Title I teacher should use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Words Their Way Review
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWords Their Way is a fantastic spelling, vocabualry and phonics resource for classroom teachers. The Spelling Inventories and diagnostic data tools are especially useful in aiding teachers in identifying spelling errors but more importantly in specifically showing how to move students forward into the next developmental stage. The word sorts and other spelling activities are all there for teachers to use. This text develops teachers' knowledge and understanding about how students learn to spell and to effectively teach spelling. I have used the video footage to inservice teachers to demonstrate how spelling lessons can operate in classrooms.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, but a word of caution...
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI love the "Words Their Way" program! I would give caution however to those who wish to buy this product because it has a cd: if you own a Mac computer, it will NOT run on a newer Mac! My old PC can run the cd fine, but hat computer is on its way out the door so I have a Mac now, and the cd is not supported. I contacted Pearson about this and hey are moving away from cd and going all online, so you will have to pay for online support from here on out...
