I found this book easy to understand with its color images of the photoshop menu settings and step by step instructions to more tasks than I knew existed. Since it's jam packed with information, skimming for the pictures brought me back easily to what I needed again after I forgot what the technique would be listed as in an index.
I've tried looking up certain PS tricks online but I usually end up wishing I had this book handy. You can find what you want to do quicker. The tutorial examples ranges from simple tasks to complex, so whatever your level of expertise, you should be able to find the instructions you need. The healing brush tool (instant wrinkle remover) on p. 290 is my new best friend.

Very useful book

I have one of these books for each new application that I buy.
They're quick and easy to pick up, find an answer, put down and get on with it.
I would highly recommend this and all other Visual QuickStart guides for beginners and intermediate users who want to use the programs without spending hours with a manual.

Elaine Weinmann book on Photoshop CS4

I have been using Photoshop for over 15 years, but without training, so I was stuck with what I knew, with some explorations into the "deep dark" advanced functions, with some success and not so successful results.
This book is teaching me so much already, and makes it much easier and much more efficiently for me to use than before. It really is all encompassing "how to" use all functions.
The only thing missing is the explanation of why certain functions exist, ex: "smart objects" or "masks", it shows me 'how' to use them, but I'm still not clear 'why' I should use them.
In a class room setting, you can ask, but when you are at home reading, you can't, so I still don't know why I would use such and such functions? I would have like much more context "You use smart objects when [circumstances], to [intended results, benefits], etc ..." So, now I know 'how' but I don't know 'why' on many functions.
Recommended for ALL levels to learn how to use Photoshop's functions.

A Great Photoshop reference book

I do not use Photoshop enough to retain all it's many features therefore I am in constant need of reminders. "Photoshop CS4" is my go to book when using altering pictures. The book is in full color and has example after example of how to get from here to these. The book is easy to follow and is laid out in logical steps. If you buy one text book to walk you through Photoshop, I recommend "Photoshop CS4" highly.
