Great Experience

This is much much more interesting than the average text book. I think this a book I'd like to keep around. There is something to be said about the clarity of hindsight and this text seems to have that. It also seems (and I do stress seems) to be a very balanced view of the history of the 'recent' past. I'm actually enjoying my assigned readings for a change

It's a textbook not ulysses

Author is comprehensive in coverage of the title subject. Only criticism would be that he feels he must offer two extreme views in each chapter summary and then his own middle of the road take. This results in having to read some ridiculous points of view. After all Stalin was an evil monster, how can there be a serious opposing view?

Biased, Untrue History
Reviewed in the United States on 4 September 2013Verified Purchase
Chafe describes the New Deal combined with WWII as what got America out of the Great Depression. This, in fact, is completely false. Historian Stephen Davies shows that the New Deal kept America in the Great Depression longer than the rest of the world, where there were countries such as Britain that ended in 1933. Furthermore, as explained by professor Steven Horwitz, military production by definition is not wealth creation. The effects of the war covered up the true economic activity of the country. Robert Higgs demonstrated that the Great Depression in America didn't end till 1947-48.
By all means if you need this textbook for your college course than obviously buy it, but beware that much of what you're reading is false, outdated information. Read every word in this textbook skeptically.
