Incorporating the thinking, feeling, and behaving dimensions of human experience, the tenth edition of Corey's best-selling text helps you compare and contrast the therapeutic models expressed in counseling theories. Corey introduces you to the major theories (psychoanalytic, Adlerian, existential, person-centered, Gestalt, reality, behavior, cognitive-behavior, family systems, feminist, postmodern, and integrative approaches) and demonstrates how each theory can be applied to two cases ('Stan' and 'Gwen'). He shows you how to apply theories in practice, and helps you learn to integrate the theories into an individualized counseling style. New learning objectives identify key aspects of each theory and focus your study.

Disliked that it is so expensive for such a think book. Also, it went up forty bucks in a week.

Now for the book itself. Brilliant introduction to the counselling and psychotherapy professions at university level. The chapters are well organised with individual chapters on all the major therapy styles - person centred, psychodynamic, gestalt, existensialist, cbt, and new styles of family and feminist therapy. There is also a strong focus on applying therapy to multicultural groups.

I really love the historical context given to the original therapists. Often therapy styles coincided with the social, economic, and cultural environmemts they lived.

There are also lots of exercises, and reflections at the end of each chapter.

I find the hard copy (papeeback version) so much easier to read than the electronic version. The accessible and almost conversational style of Corey, makes it the most readable textbook I have ever read.

Only criticism, would be more diagrams to illustrate concepts, and end of chapter joumal article references. I expect the latter in an expensive university text to validate the high cost of this thin text.

In closing, strongly recommend this for any future counsellor or psychotherapist globally.

Firstly, my book arrived promptly and in excellent condition. I have started to read it and find the layout and approach excellent. I very much like Corey's style. I feel like I am in a comfortable room and being spoken to by a wise and considerate teacher. I need this at this time in my Counselling career. I am now going to source the supporting videos as I think that will help me a lot. Thanks Gerald!

This is a classic book. It presumes some knowledge and skills and seeks to build further. An excellent overview of counselling theory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guess I got lucky?? Perfect book.

I guess I’m one of the lucky ones who got a book in great shape. I went back-and-forth for a few days reading all the negative reviews and sweating paying the price for a book whose binding might break and “cheap pages” would fall out. I went for it, hoping I could return it if that was the case, and I was thrilled to receive a perfect copy! The hardcover version of this book came in mint condition. 10th edition, tight binding, very nice quality pages. This textbook cost $150 for my counseling course at the university store, and I got it here on Amazon.de for €73,50. Total bargain.

The book itself is worth well more than it’s price tag. Valuable foundational information for any aspiring counselor to begin their journey with. Covers all the major theories and includes excellent questions and challenge materials for each chapter.

I wouldn't usually review Textbook, but this one is a great read for counselors in training.

The book gives a nice comprehensive review of the various theories without diving in too far to each one to overwhelm the reader. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to get into the mental health field!
