5.0 out of 5 stars Practical, well-written, and wonderfully organised
Verified PurchaseIn a clear writing style that is enjoyable to read, Wright has organised the key strategies of CBT and desribed exactly how to perform them in therapy. The book covers practical advice on how to organise elements of the assessment so that information gleaned falls naturally towards a treatment strategy. The book excels in placing all the mainstream interventions of CBT into a cohesive structure. For example, when working with automatic thoughts, the author describes 6 strategies that can be used to identify them. When describing one such strategy, imagery, the author breaks this down into 6 practical ideas for implementation. Therapeutic strategies are covered in many chapters. The chapters on working with automatic thoughts informs the reader on how to implement Socratic questioning, work with the client on constructing thought-change records and reattributing cause for events. Chapters on behavioral interventions describe how to select and schedule behavioral exercises, overcome potential obstacles, conduct exposure in a way manageable for the patient and monitor progress. This by no means touches on a third of what the book will teach. Wright also introduces the concept of schemas and how to modify strategies when working with more severe symptoms. In the tone of a helpful mentor, the author advises the reader to explore specialist texts on such topics but introduces them for sake of completeness. This is a succinct and practical summary, very well organised, written in a manner that teaches and for me at least, stimulated a lot of additional ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Also it is easy to read and understand
Verified PurchasePurchased this book for my CBT training class. It is a very informative book. Also it is easy to read and understand. They use simplistic everyday language instead of complicating things with unnecessary academic lingo that only keeps your mind wondering what your just read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A practical, schematic and concise CBT compendium that every CBT practitioner should read.
Verified PurchaseThis book explains the core CBT principles and techniques and helps you to develop them following real-life examples. Every chapter provides detailed explanations on how to use CBT techniques and their rationale. There are some useful examples and the vignettes included in the DVD are very clear and helpful. I have been practicing CBT for some years and I have never found a book so schematic and practical. I think that every CBT trainee should read it at some point.
