Excellent value for fundamentals
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 September 2013Verified Purchase
This book is a classic, having been available in a number of editions through the 80s and 90s, with the fourth (and last) from 1996. Much has changed in the world of communications since then, and parts of the book are obsolete now: In particular, OSI protocols (X.25, OSI Transport etc) are pretty much extinct now, with TCP/IP having taken over. However, the first few chapters outline the basic principles of computer communications, and the fundamentals of how protocols work. Topics like encryption and compression are still good. The LAN stuff is largely still useful, and there is a good starter for TCP/IP.
I would recommend the book to any undergraduates taking courses on data communications and networking. It's very inexpensive to have your own copy now, and you will find a lot of essential theory in there.

A very good old book

Some books are like wine, the older the better. That is the case with the book "Data Communications, Computer Networks and Open Systems". Nowdays, some issues are taken for granted or assumed that these issues were well explaned in the books in the past
