This dazzling overview of a turbulent century explores both dramatic events and underlying trends. Despite a terrible two-stage 'European civil war' and the traumatic rise and fall of communism, wealth has increased dramatically alongside a four-fold leap in population, women's lives have been transformed, America has assumed undisputed political and cultural leadership. The Penguin History of the Twentieth Century is powerful, international and definitive.

Penguin History of the 20th Century
Reviewed in the United States on 3 October 2014Verified Purchase
The author is to be congratulated for taking on a huge task: describing the events and trends of a century filled with enormous changes. He maintains an excellent balance throughout, giving just as much emphasis to familiar areas, such as Western Europe, as he does to far-away places such as Africa and Asia. In addition to reporting incidents, he also explains their significance for the century as a whole. One possible improvement would be to shorten the look-back at the 19th-century that takes up the first 20% of the book. It is not until page 175 that we finally read the much anticipated sentence that starts "As 1901 began..."

Reviewed in Italy on 25 April 2016Verified Purchase
E' in lingua inglese.

An excellent survey of the century. Gives a fine overview from which the reader can branch out into more detailed, more specialist reading.
