How do we, as humans, arrive at what we call morally or ethically good or bad decisions? What processes are involved in making ethical decisions? Is there a way to move towards ethical maturity and how will being ethically mature assist us with any future decisions we might make?

This is an ambitious book. It moves from a view of ethics and ethical decision making as meeting basic and minimal requirements to the presentation of a model of ethical maturity—how to be the best professional you can be. Most practitioners head for codes of ethics and ethical frameworks to help them resolve ethical issues and dilemmas. They go 'outside' rather than 'inside'.
Ethical Maturity in the Helping Professions suggests a different approach that views ethical codes and frameworks as the first stepping stone to a higher ethic—an ethic of fidelity, relationships, and trust. Building on Rest's four components of ethical practice, Michael Carroll and Elisabeth Shaw propose six components that together make up what they call 'ethical maturity' or practical ethical wisdom. Born from who we are, and fashioned on the anvil of experience and knowledge, the book challenges helping professionals to review what they mean by ethics and suggests they step up to a higher ethic of relational accountability.

Ethical Maturity in the Helping Professions provides a comprehensive overview of the most influential ideas in ethical thinking across the ages and considers the ethical challenges faced in various contexts of educational, research, business and organisational sectors. The book reflects on the history, philosophy and science of ethics through an interdisciplinary approach and encourages the reader to consider their own ethical decision-making and the influences which play a role in shaping them. The authors also introduce a brand new model for becoming an ethically mature professional.

This book is essential reading for practising and student psychotherapists, psychologists, counsellors, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, health care and allied professionals.

Product description

Review

'For me, one of the hallmarks of a good book is whether I feel more engaged in its topic and more active in observing what is going on in my life around that topic. A really good book renews me with new insight and a sense of vitality. This book has delighted me with these qualities.'
Professor Tim Bond, Head of The Graduate School of Education, University of Bristol

'Drawing on a sound understanding of philosophy and psychology, and grounded on the firm footings of practical experience, this important book encourages us to grow into our humanity. It illuminates not only the theory, but also the practice of living an 'examined life', which challenges and ultimately rewards the reader who hopes to flourish within the context of both individual and organisational life.'
Dr Simon Longstaff, Executive Director, St James Ethics Centre

'GO AND BUY THIS BOOK: you need to read it. And then read it again... we are treated to a wonderfully engaging insight into the work of Socrates and Aristotle, with the former attempting to define the constituents of the 'good, (ethically mature), life' and the latter being concerned with moral character... a wonderfully researched and authoritively written account of a range of ways in which poor/dangerous practice can be made much more, or less, likely to occur... They also raise fascinating issues concerning how to learn to be more ethically sensitive, (Chapter 8), and what/how training courses might best teach on the topic (Chapter 17)... this book is an absolute treasure trove of knowledge and full of prompts for reflecting on and stretching one's practice... I whole heartedly applaud Carroll and Shaw for framing this hugely important conversation and outlining a process for engaging in it.'
The Coaching Psychologist;
Dr Sally Denham-Vaughan, Co-Founder/Director at Relational Change

'This book radiates originality and brings a creative and free spirited attitude to a topic that is often dragged down with universal protocols of compliance and a focus on rule following... This book is a thought provoking and engaging presentation of a unique and exciting area of applied professional ethics. The authors' non-authoritarian tone and accessible language make for an illuminating journey into the area of ethical maturity... Most importantly, they manage to inspire readers to reach new heights in their own personal, emotional and ethical development.'
Colloquium

'Ethical Maturity in the Helping Professions is an interesting and accessible read which is ideal for counselling, coaching, and psychotherapy students and graduates alike. I know that supervisors will ask me about getting copies of the book.'
Professor Maria Gilbert, Joint Head of Integrative Department, Metanoia Institute, London

'I love this book. It provides an excellent summary of the issues and takes the discussion about ethics to a new level of maturity. I have made it required reading for our students.'
Professor David Lane, Middlesex University, UK, and Director of the Professional Development Foundation

I had to buy this book for one of my classes and I actually enjoyed it!

It is a bit of a hard read though (the vocabulary and its delivery) I had a few fellow classmates and my teacher mention this.

But overall good

A wonderfully rich exploration of the origins and components of ethical maturity, based on the authors' lifetime reflection on the complex dynamics operating within and between individuals.

A really welcome addition to the literature available to facilitate the ethical education and personal reflection of counsellors, therapists and other helpers.

I feel that I shall be dipping in and out of this comprehensive, thoughtful and entertaining volume throughout my career.
