The new edition of Understanding Contemporary China has been thoroughly revised to reflect a half-decade of significant events and trends, both domestically and in the international arena. The result is an accessible, well-grounded exploration of the most crucial issues affecting China today.

The authors assume no prior knowledge on the part of the reader, making the book a perfect choice for interdisciplinary Introduction to China courses, as well as for courses in political science and sociology. Numerous maps and photographs enhance the text.

The book delivers what the title promises. It is comprised of essays by different authors on various aspects of Chinese contemporary life. It does a good job of introducing the historical background, and in my limited knowledge of the subject, it seems to be even-handed. It is neither condescending nor obsequious toward its subject, but maintains a stance of sympathetic objectivity. It is the best single volume I have found that covers its subject. Several of my colleagues who teach political science and Chinese use this as a primary text for their courses. It is an academic work and the style of some of the essays can be a bit dry, but the subject is so fascinating that I think it will hold the interest of the general reader.
