The book delivers what the title promises. It is comprised of essays by different authors on various aspects of Chinese contemporary life. It does a good job of introducing the historical background, and in my limited knowledge of the subject, it seems to be even-handed. It is neither condescending nor obsequious toward its subject, but maintains a stance of sympathetic objectivity. It is the best single volume I have found that covers its subject. Several of my colleagues who teach political science and Chinese use this as a primary text for their courses. It is an academic work and the style of some of the essays can be a bit dry, but the subject is so fascinating that I think it will hold the interest of the general reader.
